Description

T W. WISSINGER. Angers.
10199391. Patented Jan.22, 1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE' THOMAS W. WVISSINGER, OF WEST MILTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,391, dated January 2'2, 1878; application filed May 7, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. WISSINGER,
of West Milton, county of Miami, and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Auger, of which the following is a specification: The nature of my invention consists in double forwardly-curved cutting-bits, with vertical projecting cutting-edges to each bit, the same being attached to a cylindrical shaft, having the usual form of thread at point of entrance, thus forming an anger which is especially well adapted to boring-machines, but may be used with the ordinary handle or brace.
Figure l is a side view of the anger with a portion of the shaft cut away. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the cutting-edges or bits.
A is an illustration of the shaft, the upper end terminating in such form as is suited to the machine, brace, or handle to which it may i be desirable to have the auger attached. On
opposite sides of the shaft are forged the cutting-edges or bits B. The edges are curved forwardly, so that the chip is raised before the vertical cutting-edges 0 separate the wood at the margin of the hole. The vertical cutting.- edges extend above and below the horizontal bits, and slightly in advance. (See Fig. 2.) The shaft terminates in the usual form of coneshaped screw.
This form of bit is operated much easier than the ordinary screw-auger, and the operation is more satisfactory than the usual form of brace-bit.
What I claim as my invention is As a new article of manufacture, the augerbit having a cylindrical shaft, A, the horizontal cutting-edges B, with vertical cuttingedges 0, extending both above and below and slightly in front of the said cutting-edges B, substantially as described.
THOMAS W. WISSINGER.
