Description
@tutti @para ESAU D. TAYLOR AND WILLIAM RUDE, OF `IIORNELLSVILLE, N EW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 107,562, lated September 20, 1870.
.IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR BREAKING HIDES AND WORKINGLEATHER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same l'o all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, Esau 1 TAYLOR and WiL- LIAM RUDE, of Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have inventedtertain new and useful Improvements in Hide-breaking and Leather-working Machinery; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in whieh Figure l represents a sectional side elevation of the movable table, with y thecompression-roller for bringing the hide or leather in contact withthc mangle-roller, and the mechanism for operating it by the foot; also, the niangle-roller and its driving mechanisn1, all suspended from the joists of the building;
likewise, the water-pipes for sprinkling the hide or leather with cold or hot water, and a sectional view of a steam-boiler. A
Figure 2 shows a front view of the working-table in section, and the suspended breaking mechanism and driving power, with thc'sprinkler for softening'the hide while in the process ot' breaking or working the leather.
The object of our invention is to econoinize and lighten manual labor, and to facilitate the process of tanning and dressing leather.
Our vinvention consists iiLsuSpending the power machinery, for breaking and mangling hides, to the joists or frame of the building, and having a truck'or movable table on which the hides are placed .to bc brought under and in Contact with the right and left spiral surface mangle-roller, so that the hide can be turned and twisted and moved between the manglerollcr and the'prcsser-roller in the table in any direction without interfering withor being obstructed by posts, or any part of the machinery.
Also, in the arrangement of the water-pipes and sprinklers, and connection with a steam-bQiler, for
vsupplying cold or hot water, when necessary, in the process of breaking hides or working of the lcathcr.
To enable others to niakeand use our invention, we will describe it more in detail, referring to the drawing and to the letters marked thereon.
' On the lower iioor A, an`d conveniently near to a steam-boiler, l, we provide a place for our table, O, to stand. v
rlhe table may be furnished with truck-rollers o c, so that it can be easily moved from its position to any place on the floor, and used for other purposes other than the breaking of hides.
ln the bed of the table C' there is an opening, b, under which is placed a roller, l), which may be groovcd, iiutcd, or plain, as desired, the roller D having its journals in sliding boxes d d, in thc sides of the table (l, and a lifting-bar, o, underneath, connected with a foot-lever frame, E,Aso that the roller can be elevated to press the hide hard against the mangleroller G, which has its journals ruiming in the lower ends of the suspended trame-timbers F F, which .are secured to the joists H, and rmlyscoured by the braces ff. y
lhedriving-pulleys I I on the outer ends of 'the counter-shaft J, with the'driving-pulleyK, are con nected with the suspended frame l", the motion of the .mangle-rollcr G being very rapid, the speed being multiplied on the pulleys 'i 'i from the pulleys I I on the counter-shaft J, which is driven by the belt kfrom a large drum or pulley on .the'main shaft. l
The water necessary for softening dry hides when in the process of breaking may be taken from a reser` voir or hydrant in ltwo pipes, M N, one of them passing into and` through a portion of the boiler B, by which means the water in it will become sucient-ly heated for the purpose, the pipes extending up to the joists andalong to one of the suspended flame-timbers, F, and down to near the break-roller G, where p they are placed parallel with it, the horizontal port-ion of the pipes M andN being perforated with a series of small holes, so as to form a sprinkler onto the roller G, and the poitionof the hide it is acting upon.
'lhe pipes M and N are provided with stop-cocks, o p, so that `the supply of either hotor cold water, or both, can be 'regulated at pleasure.
The advantages of our i mprovements, as will readily be seen, are, that the hide or leather` can be handled in any direction, and thc roller made to bear upon it, more or less, in any place without heilig obstructed by any frame-work.
What we claim as our invention,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv
l. Suspcndingr the break-roller G and frame-work F, and all of the power machinery for operating the saine from the joists H, or frame of the building, so that it is detached from the table C', as herein described.
2. The movable table C, as constructed, for operating substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The arrangement of thc water-pipes and sprinklers M. N, one heilig connected with the steam-boiler B, in combination with the roller G, as set forth.
lIn testimony whereof we hereunto subscribe our names in the presence of ESAU D. TAYLOR.
WM. RUDE.
