To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, HARRY GRANT FRAN- 01s, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of 820 North Harrison street Rushville, in the county of Bush and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Adhesive- Spreaders; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to adhesive spreaders and it has for its object the improvement in construction of such devices whereby they are simplified and rendered more eiiicient in action.
The novelty of my invention consists in the combination and subcombination of the parts as will be hereinafter set forth and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the adhesive spreader. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the upper portion of the adhesive spreader. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3, 3, of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is an end elevation showing arrangement of levers for operating sliding bar H.
In the drawings A, represents an adhesive tank inclosed within an outer tank B, the space C between tanks A and B can be supplied with steam or hot water for heating the adhesive within the tank A. D is a perforated plate which is alternately submerged within the adhesive or raised out of it when the machine is in operation.
E is a cover or lid which covers the ad hesive when the perforated plate D is submerged within the adhesive. This cover E, protects the adhesive from having dirt or any foreign matter falling into it. It also prevents the rapid oxidation and a scum forming on top of the adhesive. Attached to the front edge near the middle lengthwise of this cover E is a cord or chain E, which passes over grooved sheaves F F which are pivoted to the standard E which is secured to the top of the tank A. One end of this cord or chain E is attached to an incline G. Two inclines are provided G and G which are secured to a sliding bar H. A cord or chain 1, is attached to one end of the sliding bar H. This cord or chain I passes over a grooved sheave I and has its Specification of Letters Patent.

This lever K has one end pivoted to a bracket K Between the cord or chain I and the bracket K the upper end of a connecting rod L is pivoted to the lever K, the lower end being pivoted to the arm M which is secured to the shaft M this shaft turns in bearings within the legs B B and the stand attached to the shaft M are arms M M which have their outer ends joined by a board M The arms M M and the board-M form a foot treadle to be used by the operator of the machine for turning the shaft M The perforated plate D is attached to the lower part of a vertically sliding bar D". This bar I) is supported at its upper end by a stand N. The stand N, has cross bars N and rollers N pivoted to it. The sliding bar D is held in position by the cross bars N and the rollers N and is free to move up and down. The stand N has a vertical slot N through this slot a stud N which is secured to the sliding bar D passes. A roller N revolves on this stud N Rollers N N are placed in the lower part of the stand N on which the bar H, rolls. Angle pieces N N are secured to the foot of the stand N, to act as guides and hold bar H in position. To operate the adhesive spreader the adhesive to be used must be placed in the tank A. at such a depth that when the perforated plate D is at its lowest position it will be completely submerged within the adhesive, and when the plate D is at its highest position as shown in the drawings, the top of the plate D will be about one quarter of an inch above the top of the tank A. When the perforated plate D is at its lowest position, the lid E will be closed down on top of the tank A.
The operation of my device is as follows: When not in use the lid E is always down on top of the tank A. The operator places his foot on the board M, pressing it down; this causes through the intervening mechanism the inclines G G to be pulled forward, raising the sliding bar D and with it the perforated plate D and lid E. The perforated plate will be covered with the adhesive and the stock to be treated can have its edges rubbed over the plate and a sufficient amount of adhesive will adhere to the stock to make a good joint, but no undue amount will be taken up causing a loss of the adhesive.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in an adhesive spreader, of a tank, a perforated plate Within the tank, vertical bars actuated by inclines for raising the plate, a tank cover operated by the bar that carries the inclines for operating the vertical bars.
2. The combination in an adhesive spreader of a tank, a perforated plate within the tank, vertical bars actuated by in clines for raising the plate, a tank cover operated by thebar that carries the inclines, the horizontal travel of the horizontal bar being greater than the vertical travel of the vertical bars.
3. The combination in an adhesive spreader of a tank, a plate Within the tank, vertical bars actuated by inclines for raising the plate carried by a horizontal bar, a foot lever for operating the horizontal bar.
