Leampatem No. 59,878, ma Nambe 2o, 186e.
SPECIFICATION.
l TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCEBN:
Be it known that We, WILLIAM VALENTINE and THOMAS C. LONGTON, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improvedlSwing 'Power 5 and We do hereby declare that the bllowingis a full, clear, andexact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in whichf- Figure 1 is a side sectional View of our invention taken in the line :z: rc,v1'ig. 1.
Figure 2, a front view ofthe same.
Figure 3, a side View ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention has for its object the obtaining of power from a Swing, Or the applying of power from a swing, arranged and adapted so as to be capable of being operated by its occupants, to the Working or driving of simple household or domestic machinery or implements, such, for instance, as churn-s, washingmachines, grindstones, etc., etc.
A A represent two vuprights connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar, a, and B represents the seat of a swing, the pendent supports, 6 b, of which are attached to a rock-shaft, C, having its bearings in the upper' ends Of the uprights A A. To the lower end of each support b, there is attached by a pivot or shaft c, which serves as a fulcrum, a lever D. The front ends of these levers are connected by a cross-rod, d,
which is in front ot' the seat, B, und at such a distance below it that itAmay serve as a convenient ,bearing or rest for the feet of the occupant of the seat B. The rear ends of the levers D D are connected by rods E with the cross-bar apof the uprights A A. By these means the occupant of the seat B, by actuating the levers D D, may operate the Swing without any assistance Whatever. On one end of the rock-shaft C there is keyed a pulley F, from which a washing-maohine G, or other device requiring a reciprocating rotating motion, may be driven by a belt e; and His an arm on the same end of said rock-Shaft, from which a churndusher, I, is Operated.- On the opposite end ot' the rock-shaft there is a pulley J, around which the belts ff pass,f being a straight and f a cross-belt. These belts also pass around the parts g g of two clutches K K on a shaft L, which has a iiy-Wheel M, or a drum upon it. 'The parts g g of the clutches are placed loosely on the' shaft L, andthe other parts k h are ykeyed 'firmly on the sha-ft. The adjoining ends of the parts'g h g h of these clutches 'have rachet teeth i on them, and between the looseparts g g a spiral spring` j is placed, which has a tendency to keep the'parts g g in contact with the 'parts h hk It will be seen that by this arrangement of the straight and cross belts, and the two clutches, a continuous rotary motion will be imparted to the shaft L, from the rock-shaft C, and any light machine that operates with a rotary motion may be driven from shaft L. v
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A swing constructed Substantially as described, in combination with the pulleys B and F, the latter being provided with thearm H,by means of which a rocking motion is imparted to the shaft of a Washing` machine, and a reciprocating motion to the dasher of a churn, substantially as described.
.2. I claim alswing constructed Substantially as described, in combination with the double pulley J, and clutches K K on the shaft L, by means of which a continuous rotary motion is imparted to the shaft L, sub= stantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM VALENTINE, THOMAS C. LONGTON.
