TIE-PLAIE AND RAIL-SUPPORTERK i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 1l4l, 19313.
Application filed=November 30, 1912. Serial No. 734,339.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Riiiinnn Annor'r, a subject of the King of England, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new" and useful Improvements in Tie-Plates and Bail-Supporters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail fasteners or tie plates and has for its object the production of an eflicient rail support or fastener, which consists of a minimum number of parts and is eflicient in operation.
Another object of this invention is the production of an eflicient rail fastener or tie plate which, after being secured to the tie will not have any tendency to slip, there-- by holding the rails against any chance of becoming spread.
lVith these and other objects in viewthis invention consists in certain novel con'ibinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a transverse section through the rail and tie plate. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the tie late. Fig. 3 is altransverse section taken tiirough a port-ioniof the rail flange and plate.
By referring to the drawing by numerals it will be seen that the rail plate comprises a body 1 having arail flange engaging lip 2 which overhangs the flange of the rail for firmly holding the rail in engagement with the plate 1. A plurality oflongitudinally extending lips 7 are, formed upon the base 1 and are adapted to bite into the tie for preventing the sliding movement of the plate upon the tie.
The body 1 is provided with a groove 11 near its end for receiving a lip 12 which is.
placed within the groove 11. The lip 12 is inserted in the groove 11 by driving the same from the end of the plate 1. The lip 12 is also provided-with a vertical face on the side 1% for engaging the flange of the rail, and
the lip 12 is beveled for this lip is provided with aclosed face throughout its entire inner edge, and a plurality of notches 15 upon its outer edge, whereby spikes may be driven therethrpuah for holding the plate in engagement with the tie. It will be seen that the outer end of facilitating the drivmg of a spike.
A flattened the lip 2 and is provided with a plurality of apertures 10 for receiving the usual spikes whereby the plate may be held firmlv in engagement with the tie.
When the device is used the vertical face of the side 14 will bear against the edge of the rail flange and terminate evenly with the outer face of said flange, while the beveled side of the lip and the beveled side 13 of the groove 11 bear against each other and terminate evenly. Since the outer face of the lip is inclined and the outer portions terminate evenly all danger of knocking the lip out of position by being struck by some foreign object. is eliminated, as the foreign object will glance off the incline face without imparting damage to the lip.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and eflicient rail plate has been produced which may efiiciently hold the rail in a set position upon the tie and prevent the rails from spreading. It will further be seen that by means of the device, as just illustrated, and described, the rail may be placed in its correct position.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
In combination with a rail, a tie plate of the class described comprising a body, a rail engaging lip formed upon said body, said body provided with a transversely extending groove having a beveled side, -a lip fitting in said groove, said lip provided with an incline top and with a beveled side and a vertical side, said beveled side of said lip fitting under the beveled side of said plate for preventing said lip from upward movement, said beveled side being of an even height, said vertical side bearing against the lip 9 is formed in the rear of 2% emme flange of said rail and being of the same I In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my height as the thickness of sai l rail flange; signature in presence of two Witnesses.
whereby said plate lip and flange will present a smooth surfejce upon their upper faces REUBEN ABBOTT for allowing any foreign object to slide Witnesses:
thereover without injury to said' lip, and J. SHEPHERD WRIGHT, means for holding said lip in position. RIQHARD H. SMITH,
