DELOS'B. ST'ULTS, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
TIE PLATE AND RAIL FASTENING.
Application filed May 23, 1925. Serial No. 32,379.
This invention relates to railway tie plates, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel and simple device of this character which shall be espec1ally adapted to be secured to a tie by spikes having split shanks and which shall include means adapted to insure the lateral separation of the shank members while the spikes are being driven into the tie.
A further object of the invention 1s the provision of a railway tie plate which shall be adapted to be readily positioned upon a tie beneath a rail and which shall include rail base engaging elements adapted to prevent the rail and tie from having any relative vertical or horizontal movements.
The foregoing and other objects are attained by the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a railway tie plate constructed in accordance With my invention,
Figure 2 is an elevational view illustrating the application of the plate, the portions of the rail and tie shown being in vertical section, V
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the vertical plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a detail sectional View taken. on the vertical plane indicated by the line 4- 41 of Figure 3.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and designated in the several views of the accompanying drawing, by similar reference characters.
In the drawing 1 designates a tie, 2 a rail, and 3 my improved tie plate.
The tie plate is of oblong formation and is positioned upon the tie 1 beneath the rail 2. The tie plate 3 comprises similar sections 1 detachably connected together by interlocking tongues and grooves 6 which are located at their inner or meeting edges. The tie plate sections 4. are each provided with angular lugs 7 adapted to engage the base flanges 2 of the rail 2. The lugs 7' are arranged adjacent the longitudinal edges of the tie plate 3, and between each pair of the lugs 7 the tie plate is provided with an penh1g8 for the reception of spikes 9 having heads 10 contacting with the base flanges 2 and laterally separable shank men'ibei's 11 engaging the tie 1 in different angular Zones to prevent the spikes from becoming loose. The openings 8 are out of alinement, and to insure the lateral separation of the shank members 11 during the driving of the spikes 9 they are provided with webs 12. The webs 12 are arranged longitudinally with respect to the tie 1 and plate 3, and are of triangular formation in cross section. The vertical dimension of the webs 12 is less than the thickness or corresponding dimension of the plate 3, and those Walls of the openings 8 that are located opposite the inclined sides of the webs are inclined and substantially parallel to said sides.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it should be apparent that since the sections 4 are detachably connected together by the interlitting tongues 5 and grooves 6 the plate 3 may be easily and quickly positioned upon a tie beneath a rail, that the webs 12 of the openings 8 will insure the lateral separation of the shank members 11 during the driving of the spikes 9 into the tie, and that the spikes 9 are firmly anchored in the tie and will as the result and in addition to the angular lugs 7 prevent the tie, plate and rail from having any relative movements.
V1 hat is claimed is 1. A tie plate adapted for disposition between a rail and tie provided with spike receiving openings in which are .lOCtE'ttll spreader webs and within the thickness of the plate.
.2. A tie plate adapted for disposition between a rail and tie provided with spike receiving openings in which. are located spreader webs of angular formation in cross section and within the thickness of the plate.
3. A tie plate adapted for disposition between a rail and tie provided with spike receiving openings having opposed walls thereof inclined, and spreader webs arranged within the openings and within the thickness of the plate and having inclined sides arranged in opposition to the inclined walls of the openings.
4. A tie plate adapted for disposition between a rail and tie provided with spike receiving openings having inclined opposed Walls, and spreader Webs arranged Within the openings and Within the thickness of the plate and having inclined sides arranged in opposition to the inclined Walls of the openings, the vertical dimension of the plate be ing greater than that of the Webs.
5. A tie plate adapted for disposition between a rail and tie comprising sections, cletachably connected together and provided with spike receiving openings Within the 10 thickness oi the plate in which are located spreader ebs, and angular lugs carried by each section of the plate.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
