GAUGE PLATE FOR RAILS.

To all 10710112 it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN Josnrn BUJoL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Esther-wood, in the parish of ricadia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gauge Plates for Rails, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to gauge plates for rails and more particularly to a rail seat so constructed that it provides means for holding a gauge rod, preventing spreading of the rails, and against movement longitudinally of the rail sections.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may he applied to the'tie and the tie slid into place to replace an old tie which is being removed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be cheaply and readily produced, which will be durable and e'ilicient in service and a general improvement in the art.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a section of track having gauge plates constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the track as shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view through a pair of chairs and rails supported thereby showing the mounting of the gauge rod;
Figure 1 is a perspective of a single gauge plate;
Figure 5 is a perspective of one end of the gauge rod.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the seat comprises a rectangular plate which is preferably approximately two inches in thickness and which has the end portions 01 its upper face, indicated at 11, beveled "from the ends of the plate so that the thickness of the plate at its ends is approximately one-half the normal thick ness of the plate or, in the present instance, one inch. portion 11 at one end of the plate a trans verscly extending upstanding rib 12 1s At the outer edge of the beveled formed, the purpose of which will presently appear.
The'upper surface of the plate is subdivided longitudinally of the two sect-ions by a longitudinally extending channel 13 subdividing the upper surface into two sections Li and 15 upon which the flange F of the rail R seats. Each beveled portion 11 associated with the sections 1% and 15 has formed therein a spike receiving opening 16. The sections 1i and 15 are the same length as the width of the rail and the spike openings 16 are formed so that the heads of the spikes will properly overlie the rails. At its outer end, this channel is enlarged, as at 17, this end being that end adjacent the rib 12. At this enlarged end, the plate has a vertically extending opening 18 formed therethrough.
In applying the plates, the plates are set in position with their ribs 12 outermost and may be applied to the tie before the same is shifted into position on the right of way. After the tie has been placed, the rails are settled into position and the spikes driven home, thus firmly holding both the plates and the rails. At intervals, the anti-spread ing gauge 19 is applied, this gauge comprising a flat bar 20 adapted to engage the tie between the plates 10 and having its ends vertically oliset, as at 21 and 22. These ends 21 and 22 extend through the channels of the plates and are concealed therein and the end 21 has termed thereon a hook 23 adapted to receive the outer edge of the flange of the corresponding rail. The end 22 has its eX tremity rounded and screw-threaded, as indicated at 24, and has slidably mounted thereon an element 25 having a shank portion 26 adapted to enter the opening 18 of the plate and which shank portion is provided with an opening 27 for the passage or the threaded portion 24L of the end 22 of the bar. The shank has an angular extension 28 adapted to overlie and engage against the face of the outer portion of the flange of the second rail. The element 25 may be adiusted longitudinally by means of nuts 29 to draw the rails toward one another and maintain the same in their proper positions.
It will be obvious that in spreading, the flanges o1 the rails will engage against the ribs 12 and that these flanges will tend to prevent this spreading. This tendency to separate or spread, when noted, may be readily cured by tightening up upon the gauge rod 19 in the usual manner. It will also be obvious that the construction hereinhet'ore set forth is capable ot a certain range oi change and modification without 1natcrially departing from the spirit. of my invention and I accordinglx do not limit myself to such specific structure except as herein atter claimed.
I claim 1. A gauge plate tor rails having a seat for the flange o'l. the rail, said plate having opening termed therethrough tor the passage of spikes at opposite sides of the rail, said plate having in its upper surface a longitudinall extending channel transversely dividing the rail seat.
2. In combination with a tie. a pair ot plates inoui'ited upon opposite ends thereof and each providing a seat tor the. flange of a rail, said plate having at the outer edge of the Range seat thereof an upstanding ridge the plates being formed with aligned channels subdividing the rail seats thereof and a gauge rod having its ends directed through said slots and provided with hooks for engagement with the outer edges ot the flanges of rails applied to the seat.
3. In combination with a tie, a pair of plates mounted upon opposite ends thereof and each providing a seat for the flange of a rail. said plate having at the outer edge of the flange seat thereot' an upstanding ridge, the plates being termed with aligned channels subdividing the rail seats thereof and a gauge rod having its ends directed through said slot and provided with hooks for engagement with the outer edges of the flanges ot' rails applied to the seat, said gauge rod being adjustable as to etiectivc length. i

In combination with a tie. a pair of gauge plates secured thereto and adapted for the reception of rails, each of said plates having a portion adapted tor engagement 1, the flange ot the rail when the rails are properly spaced and with which the rails engage upon spreading tl-iereot whereby they resist said spreading, said plates being each provided with a channel directed longitudinally of the tie and permitting passage of a gauge clamp lmving means to engage the outer side edges ot the flange of the rail applied to the plates.
