HosI'ERY-rImsHme BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 14 1913.
Application filed September 14, 1912. Serial No; 720,524.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. Gnon'on Fnron, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of- Philadelphia, State of In hosiery finishing boards as ordinarily constructed of wood considerable dificulty has arisen in practice owing-to the, warping and splinterin'g of the boards which causes many dozens of seconds of imperfect stockings tobe made in adays production. It has further been found in practice that when wooden boards are employed a separate lot of boards are necessary for finishing silk work, a separate lot of boards are necessary forfinishing cotton hose, and a separate lot of boards are required for finishing delicate colors such as white, pink and blue. it has also been found in practice that the life of a wooden board is comparatively short owing to the shrinking in length and width so that the same after awhile cannot be used for standard sizes.- It has further been found necessar when the ordinary'typeof wooden board as been employed to em loy skilled labor to operate the same and since a wooden board takes a considerable time to dry, it has been necessary to employ an excessive amount of steam.
-With the above ends in view, my invention c'dflsists" of a novel construction of a novel hosiery finishing board, comprising a metal-- 'lic portion and a handle of heat resisting material detachably connected therewith, said board embodying other novel features of construction, all as will be herein after fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims,
It further consists of other novel features of construction all as will .be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown inthe accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of I which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumen talities as herein shown anddescribed.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a of Fig. 1. Fig-3 represents a section on line r-az; Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of the handle in detached position. Fig.
'5 represents a sectional View of another embodiment of my invention showing-the is to be on the opposite side of that seen in Fig. 3.- Fig. 6 represents a sectional view on an enlarged scale of a portion of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 represents a perspective view of the fastening nut.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :1 designates a hosiery finishing board. embodying my invention, the sanie'being provided with a. leg' portion 2 and a'foot portion which are forn'led of a thin metal sheet or plate and preferably of aluminum or its equivalent. The board is provided on one side near one edge with a groove 4 which is located a .manner of forming a board when the groove I The board 1- is provided with a desired number of apertures 5 through which are adapted to pass the fastening-bolts 6', which latter also pass through an apertured plate 12 and through apertures 7 in the bifurcated end 8 of a grasping handle 9, said bolts passing through the apertured plate 10 and being provided with nuts 11 whereby the grasping handle 9 is detachably connected with the body portion of theboard. This grasp ing handle 9 is preferably made of asbestos or other heat resisting material so that the operator is not liable to burn his hands when the form is in the finishing oven.
It will be apparent that my novel finishing board will have practically no wear thereonf'except at the point where the handle is attached which will be very slight and the board will retain its shape and will not vary in size by continuous use. It will be noted that in the present inhandle '9, as will be clearly understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 6. Any' desired type of fastening device may be employed,
and the nut 11, as seen in Fig. 7 is provided in the present instance with openings 13,
whereby the same is adapted to be. actuated by an ordinary spanner wrench.
Since the'board is smooth and thin, it has been found in practice tha-t'a saving of 24 inches ofcotton or silk in every dozen manufactured canb'e obtained over the useof the ordinary wooden board; for example,
. where a stocking is made 28 inches long it is only necessary to make the same 27 inches long. I
There is no possibility of the metal board warpin or splintering and it is therefore impossi le to make seconds by making holes in the goods when they are being placed on the boards, 4
It will be further apparent that since the metal finishing board does not absorb the moisture it will dry in a very-much shorter time than is required with a wooden board and asmaller amount of steam is necessary than is the case .with a wooden board.
The groove 4 may be located on either side of the finishing board, and in practice both right and left hand finishing boards are employed so that it will. be understood that it is within the scope of my invention to employ such groove either on the right or left hand side of the board, as will be understood by reference to Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawing.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and'useful construction of a hosiery finishing'board which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and .while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. A hosiery finishing board consisting of a metal sheet, and a handle detachahly 'connected therewith.
2. 'A hosiery finishing board consisting of a; metal sheet, and a handle of heat resisting material connected therewith.
3. A hosiery finishing board having a sin gle groove on one side in proximity to its rear edge and extending from the leg portion' to the end of the toe portion.
4. A hosiery finishing board consisting of a thin metallic sheet conforming to' the shape of the stocking and having a sin le groove in its side substantially parallel with the rear edge of the board.
5. A hosiery finishing board consisting of a sheet of material having a groove in one side adapted to receive a seam, and a grasping handle detachably connected with said board.
6. A hosiery finishing board having a seamreceiving groove in-one side thereof, and an asbestos grasping handle connected with said board.
7. A hosiery finishing board having a seam'receiving groove in one side thereof, a grasping handle having a bifurcated end to receive said board, and fastening devices passing through said board and said bifurcated end.
