FOOTREST FOB SEWING-MACHINES.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELLEN J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Footrests for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in foot rests for sewing machines, the object being to provide a foot rest which can be readily attached to any part of the frame of the sewing machine to enable the operator to rest her foot in handling the goods being operated on.

Another object of my invention is to provide a foot rest which is slidably mounted in a support secured to the frame so that the same can be moved out of the way when not in use.

Another and further object of the invention is to provide a foot rest which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which is composed of a support having means for clamping the same to the frame of the sewing machine to provide it with a guide way to receive the slidably mounted foot rest.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

In the drawing 1 indicates the frame of the sewing machine which may be of any of the well known constructions now in use and 2 my improved construction of foot rest showing the same attached to the frame.

The foot rest comprises a support 3 provided with a fixed jaw 4 and a movable jaw 5 adapted to be clamped over the frame of the sewing machine by a bolt 6 and wing nut 7 and by this construction the support 3 may be easily and quickly attached to any part of the sewing machine frame but of course I am aware that the detailed construction of clamping means is not essential as other clamping means can be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The support is provided with a reduced extension 8 provided with an opening 9 forming a guide way adapted to receive a rod 10 which is provided with a fixed knob 11 at one end and a threaded portion 12 at its opposite end over which is arranged a threaded knob 13. By constructing the foot rest proper of a rod in this manner the same can be readily inserted in the guide way or removed therefrom. When the foot rest is to be used it is forced inwardly under the body of the sewing machine in position to receive the foot of the operator and when not 1n use it is moved outwardly so as to be out of the way of the operator when sewing on the machine.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a foot rest for a sewing machine comprising a support having means for attaching the same to the frame of the sewing machine and provided with a guide way in which is slidably mounted a rod forming a foot rest having a knob at each end to prevent the foot rest from slipping off and to facilitate the insertion and removal of the rod from the support.

What I claim is:

1. A foot rest for sewing machines comprising a support having means for attaching the same to the frame of a machine, a. foot rest slidably mounted in said support and capable of being extended to either side thereof.

2 A foot rest for sewing machines comprising a support having means for clam mg the same to the frame of a machine, said support being provided with a ide way, a

rod slidably mounted in said guide way haw-I96 ing a knob at each end, said rod being capable of being moved outwardly in either direction to form a support.

3. A foot rest for sewing machines comprising a. support having a reduced extension provided with an opening, a rod slidably mounted in said openin said rod having a fixed knob at one on and a removable knob at its opposite end, said rod being capable of being moved within said su port to form a foot rest to either side thereo f In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
