1 Claim. (Cl. 158-140) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in a cover for ironing boards and constructed to provide a holder or a removable iron pad.
An important object of the invention is to provide an ironing board cover adapted for detachably securing on an ironing board and `forming parallel pleats in the cover adjacent one end thereof and in which an iron pad of asbestos or other suitable material may be slidably received for convenient removal and which forms a rest for the iron to avoid scorching or burning of the cover.
Another object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relative inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure lis atop plan view;
Figure 2 is a bottom plan View;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure l;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on a line 4--4 of Figure l; and
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the cover removed from the ironing board, and partly broken away and shown in section.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration we have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates an ironing board cover which is constructed of suitable cloth and having eyelets 6 at its side edges to receive a lacing 7 for attaching to an ironing board 8. The underside of the cover 5 has a patch 7' sewed, as at 8', to said cover `at the front or narrow end of the ironing board and proatent C) viding a pocket 9 in which the front or narrow end of the board is inserted.
A pair of pleats 10 and 11 are formed in spaced apart parallel relation to each other in a transverse position on top of the cover 5 by folding the material upon itself and securing the folded material to the cover by stitching 12. The pleats 10 and 11 are folded downwardly on top of the cover to form opposed channels 13 and 14 in which an asbestos or other suitable pad 15 is slidably inserted.
The pleats 10' and 11 extend through the Width of the cover and extend downwardly at the side edges of the ironing board 8 and under the bottom of the board with terminal eyelets 6 therein, as shown more clearly in Fig ure 4 of the drawings so that the tying of the cover on the board by the lacing 7 will stretch the pleats in a lengthwise direction to hold the pleats tightly on top of the pad 15. The tightening of the lacing 7 will also tighten the pleats 10 and 11 downwardly on top of the pad to retain the latter in a xed position between the pleats on top of the cover 5.
If desired, the pad may be removed and replaced or used for other purposes.
The :foregoing is considered as illustrative of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the Y art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
An ironing board cover comprising a sheet of cloth adapted to cover an ironing board and being wider than an ironing board for folding of its edges around and under an ironing board, said cover having a pair of pleats extending transversely thereof in spaced parallel relation to each other and folded downwardly on top of said cover to form a pair of channels, and a pad inserted in said channels, said pleats extending completely across said cover and being foldable around and under an ironing board and having terminal lacing means for connecting the same and for tightening the pleats around an ironing board to hold the pad in place.
