DOOR-OPERATING DEVICE.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. FABRIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented newand useful Improvements in Door-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to simplify the operating of elevator doors, and the mechanisms employed, by combining the door hanger and operating means in one mechanism and hiding the same behind the transom bar of the inclosure, thereby preventing the doors from being opened from the floor of the building, where open grillwork is used in construction, and doing away with the unsightly device now in use and so easily operated from the floor.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combina tion of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a view of a portion of an elevator inclosure, showing the upper portion of two doors and a hanger and operating means therefor embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 0a00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line y-y of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of a hanger member cross section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates a transom bar such as generally employed above the door opening of an inclosure protecting the well opening of an elevator. Brackets 2 are attached to the transom bar and support horizontal tracks 3 and 4 which are arranged in parallel position and are spaced apart by means of fillers 5 which are slipped upon the bolts or fastenings 6 connecting the tracks to the brackets. The track 3 extends across the entire width of the inclosure, whereas the track 4 extends only part way. At the landing the inclosure comprises a fixed part 7 constituting a panel and an opening which is closed by means of two doors 8 and 9. Hangers 10 are secured to Specification of Letters Patent.

Hangers 15 are secured to the door 8 and extend above the bars 11 and support a track 16 which is mounted upon the wheels 12. The hangers 15 extend in front of the outer bar 11 so as to clear the same and thereby admit of unobstructed movement of the door 8. It is noted that the door 9 is mounted to travel upon the track 3, whereas the door 8 having the track 16 connected therewith is arranged to travel upon the wheels 12, hence the movement of the door 8 is twice that of the door 9, such movement being so proportioned that when the doors are at the limit of their movement in either direction they are either fully open or closed. The track 16 is somewhat longer than the width of the door 8 and its lower corners are made rounding and beveled to facilitate and insure the entrance of the track 16 into the grooves of the wheels 12 when the door is traveling in either direc tion. The wheels 12 are grooved so as to insure fixing the position of the parts 3 and 16.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. In combination a track, wheels mounted upon the track, a door located in a different plane from the track and wheels and supported thereby, means for preventing tilting of the door consisting of a track and wheel, a third track mounted upon the wheels supported upon the first mentioned track and receiving movement therefrom, and a second door connected with the third track.
2. In combination transversely spaced tracks having a horizontal and fixed arrangement, two doors, a bar having connection with one of the doors, a plurality of load-sustaining Wheels mounted upon said bar and arranged to travel upon one of the tracks, another Wheel mounted upon said bar and arranged to travel upon the other Copies of this patent may be obtained forfive cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,'
