JEWELRY.
Be it known thatI, FRnDnRIcK B. Weiss, citizenof the United States, residing at Newark, in the county ofEsseX and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelry; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and .to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification. 1
This invention relates, generally, to 1mprovements in jewelry; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly to a novel setting or holding device for use with precious and semi-precious stones when used as pendants or drops.
The present invention has for its principal objects to provide a neat, simple and secure means for securing the usual ornamental and metal setting or holding device to the usually pointedor tapered end of a precious or semi-precious stone, with a view of obviating the drilling into the end of the stone, in a direction of the length of the stone, thereby avoiding largely the danger of cracking or splitting the thin end-portion of the stone, and obviating the possibility of insecurely fastening the metal setting or holding device by means of a pin and cement upon the thin and longitudinally drilled end-portion of the stone.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following de-' tailed description of the present invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel setting or holding device for precious and semi-precious stones when used as pendants or drops; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the provision of a precious or semi-precious stone, in the form of a pendant or drop, provided near its pointed or tapered end-portion with a laterally drilled hole, and an ornamental metal setting adapted to be fitted over the pointed and laterally drilled portion of the pendant or drop, and provided with means arranged within the said laterally drilled holes, whereby the stone is securely fastened in its supported relation Specification of Letters latent.

with the metal setting, and that without the use of cement, as is now the custom.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are two elevations of a pendant or drop made according to and showing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention; and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section, taken on line 33 in said Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a face view of the stone, with the metal setting or holding device omitted from said view, and Fig. 5 is a part elevation and part vertical section of the stone, the said section being represented as being taken on line 5-5 in said Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical sectional representation of a metal setting and a stone, in the form of a pendant or drop, provided with a laterally drilled hole and illustrating in connection therewith a modified fastening means, but still embodying the leading features of the present invention. 1
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to.
indicate corresponding parts. 7
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the usual precious 'or semi-precious stone, in the form of a pendant or drop, the surface-portions of which may be of any suitable ornate configuration, as will be clearly understood. The said pendant or drop is provided at a suitable point, near the tapered or pointed end-portion 2 of the pendant or drop 1 with a receiving portion, preferably in the form of a laterally extending hole, as 3, which is drilled or otherwise formed in the said pendant or drop 1.
Suitably mounted and fitted over the tapered or pointed -end-portion 2 of the pendant or drop 1 is an ornamental sup porting or suspension device, made of metal or other suitable material in the form of a bell-shaped shell, as 4:, withthe upper endportion of which may be connected, in any suitable manner, a ring, as 5, or other suitable means of suspension. One means of permanently securing the said shell 4 to the said pendant or drop 1 is shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, said means consisting essentially of a pair of prong-like members or tongues 6 with which the said shell 4 is provided, the lower and free end-portions of said prong-like members or tongues 6 being angularly bent in directions;tQWardLeach" other, ,fl0.,:fbrm1 suitable retaining or holding fingers .orv lugs 7, which are sprung-from thezoppositefaces:

Inthis construction, the pendantordrop l'islike Wise providedwith a laterally extending hole, andhthesaid setting or-shell is pro-' vided in its opposite sideswith suitably dis; posed holes pr -perforations, as 8', which when; the setting" or. shell isarranged upon; the pointed end+portionlof the pendant or drop, respectively register with the respeci tiveends of theilaterally extending-ghole incthe pen dantwordrop. A pin9' of suit-f able length isthereupon passed through'the registering holes 8 and 3, and I the end-pol tions of the said-,pin 9iarethenriveteddown upon the surface-portions of) ,the' setting or shell, whereby the parts are securely mounted in their assembledrelation, as Will b6- 7 clearly evident.
I amfully .aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combination of the several parts, Without departing from the scopeiof the present invention as set forth in'gtheforegoing specifi 5 of "the claims which are.appended to-the saidspecil I .do not limit my present cation, and as defined in the I clauses fication.
