Letters. Patent No. 107,422, dated September i3, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS FOR BAG-S, Bcc.
The Schedule referred ton these Letters Patent and making part of lthe same I, BERNARD S'rnnmnrz', of Paris, in the Empirc'of France, have invented'certain Improvements in Fastenin'gs for vSatchels', Valises, &c., of which the follow-v ing is a specification.
Nature and Object ofthe Invention.
Myinvention relates to a cat'oh orffastening for satchels, valises, 87e.; in which a button -is turned,l to operate thefca'tch, ipst'eadof being pressed upon, or drawn or pushed in 'one direction or other, as usual.
The button operates a'liook or arm, which engages with a hook on theclasp of the Vsatchel, and the button is rendered inoperative, and the satchcl locked by means of a bolt, soepel-ated 'by a key, as to prevent the said button from-turning on'itsaxis. v
For large satchels, a' hasp' o r clasp-fastening maybe combined with mechanism which will operate bolts ibrclosing the vSatchel at the .ends at the saine time, as-at the center.
Description of tlw Accompanying Drawing.
-Figure l is a lSide `view of the hinge clasps of.. a Satchel, .showing the' fastening deviee in section;
bigure 2, a sectional plan view of part of thc mechanism;
Figure 3, an outside plan of'another part ofthe mechanism; and
Figure 4, an external view of the fastening device v and clasps.
General Description.
A metal box o r case, A, which is secured to the top of one ofthe branches of the clasp, supports a button,
a, which is arranged to turn freely ou its own axis, wit-hin an openingin-tlie top of the box.
Into this button c projeets'the-sqnared portion of a Verticalspindlc, b, which is thus attached'to the said button, so that it may tnrn'with the same.
At the lower end of ,the spindle b isa hook, c 'repv resented by dotted lines in tig. 3, which engages with a talon or hook, cl, ofthe branch of the clasp, in or- When the bolt is in the position shown by full lines in gs. 1 and 3, the spindle can be turned freely upon itsv axis, to a certain extent, and the Satchel be opened and closed by means of the hook e; but when the said bolt is'in the position indicatedby'dotted lines, its hook if will strikeagainst.andprevent the turning of the arm o andspindle, s'o that the Satchel, consequent` ly,'cann'ot be unlocked.
'The holt i is operated the pin g, an opening, o, being made in the box A, forv thepassage of the key, as shown in fig- 4, l
For large satchels, the fastening is completed by an additional mechanism `connected to vthat just described. This consists of two '-b'olts,i1 fv', containedwithin andv proiecting from the' opposite extremities of a' case, vl, which i's-securedto the branch D of the' clasp.
-f'lwo springs, :e fr, const-autlytend to force the bolts outward, and add their action to that ofthe spring tr,
and the'bolts are drawn inward by means.v of acam, k, on the operating spindle lr.
The bolts engage inhooks s-s' of the branch '15, so that, lwhen the clasp is fastened, it is held b oth at'tlxe 'middle andat the extremities.
It will he understood that'the movementsof the hooks c' and bolts ci o' are simultaneous, that isto say,
when the one is' disengaged, the others are alsodis` engaged, to open the'satchel, and when the bolt is in the position shown by dotted lines in ig.1,the Satchel is locked, and all of the parts aire immovable.
AI would remark,v in conclusion, that the catch-fastening, atthe extremities, 'and in the middle, is applicacable as well to riveted clasps as to those stitched Aupon satchels, valises, &c., and that the-iiisteningsat the l. extremities lmay bef/used either ..singly or togcther.
Claims.
1 "lhc combination of the vertical rotating spindles 1),; catch c, the spring r,bolt i, and its hook i', .all arranged upon one section of a clasp,'and the' hook al on the other section of a clasp, asset forth. l 2. The combination of the above, the ldoublecain vk on the spindleb, the bolts e and'springs :z:V 9;,'as described.
In testimony whereo'I have signed my name to t this speei'lication in. thepresence of two subscribingvwitnesses. l Y
