IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS FOR SEWIG-MACHINE CASES.v

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making rari: of the same a new and improved Lock for Sewingmachine Gases; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the lart to make and use the same, reference being hadl to the accompanying drawing forming'part ot' this specification, which drawing represents a transverse section of this invention.

4This invention relates to an additional improvement, intended to complete the invention described in Letters Patent for lockfor sewing-machine case granted to me January 4,1870, and numbered 98,616.

lhe claim granted to me in this patentreads as i'ollows:

'lhe arrangement, within the case D, of the spring catch, to engage with the cloth-plate ot' a sewingmachine, in combination withthe cam b, the parts operating together substantially as described.

I have found that this same improvement is also applicable to sewing-machines of that. class in which the cloth-plate is let into the table, so that the spring catch, instead of catching undersaid cloth-plate, must be made to catch under the arm which rises from the bed of the sewingfmachine, and to the outer end' of which is secured the needle-slide and the presser-foot. In the drawing- 'lhe letter A represents the bed of a sewing-machine, which is supported by the table B, and from which rises the goose-neck C'.

D is the case, which is intended to cover up the sewing-machine, and, in order to lock this case without requiring a hole or dcpression int-hc surface of the table, I have applied to the interior of the case aspring,- a, which connects, bya link, b, with a hook-catch, c, hinged to the tcp of the case, as shown.

The sp1-ing a bears on a cam, d, which can be revolved by means of the key e. If this cam is turnedso that its high part bears against the. spring, the

hook e is made to catch under the arm C, and the a case is locked, and it the cam is turned so that it allows the spring to recede, the hook releases the arm C, and the case can be lifted o".

To prevent the hook from becoming disengaged yfrom the arm O when thesame is in its locking position, I have applied to the interior ot' thecase a sta`l tional-y bracket, f, which bears on the edgeof the armi opposite the hook e.

It is obvious that, by changing the positihn and' shape of'thc cani d, the hook e and spring .a -m'ght be made in one piece, and such an arrangement I conf sider a mechanical equivalent of the devices shown nil the drawing.'
