CAN-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 1913.
Application filed February 26, 1913. Serial No. 750,753.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOAO B. Loonnmo, a citizen of the State of Para, and a resident of Para, in the Republic of Brazil, South America. have invented anew and Improved Can-Opener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide an apparatus of the character mentioned, to cut the extended edge of the head or top of a can, to permit the removal thereof; and to provide an apparatus of the character named, which is simple, eilicient, and convenient in operation.
One embodiment of the present invention is to be found in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a top View of a can, showing in connection therewith an opener constructed in accordance wit-h the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail view on an enlarged scale, showing the end of an opener, constructed in accordance with the present invention, and in conjunction therewith a fragment of a can having :1 rolled or crimped-edged cover.
As seen in the accompanying drawings, the apparatus is constructed in a manner similar to the construction of conventional pliers. The mated handles 8 and 9 are pivotally connected by a pin 10. and are normally spread by a flat spring, 11. The end of the handle 9 is provided with a bracketed jaw 12, the inner edge of which is shaped to form a sharp, blunt shoulder to form a shearing member to operate in conjunction with a blade 13. Between the jaw 12 and the head 14: is formed a groove or channel 15, into Which-the blade passes. The blade 13 is shortened relative to the channel 15, so that the face of the head 14 impinges upon the face of the head 16 formed on the handle 8.
Laterally extending from the head 16 is the blade 13, which registers in the manner above noted, with the jaw 12. The blade 13 is provided with a relatively sharp cutting edge curved to form a quarter segment of a 'circle. The curve of the blade 13 is outward or toward the ends of the heads 14 and 16. The inner edge or end of the blade 13 is coincident with the straight edge 17 of said blade. The junction of the straight edge and curved edge of the blade 13 forms a pricking point, which radially penetrates the rolled edge 18, which in conventional constructions is double, being formed by a thickness of the can top or cover 19 and the side 20 thereof. The force applied to close the blade 13 upon the jaw 12 is proportioned to the length of the handles 8 and 9.
In operation, the spring 11 normally opens the heads 14 and 16, the jaw 12 and blade 13 connected therewith. The operator rests the jaw 12 and the flat surface thereof upon the top of the cover 19, and moves the tool toward the can, until the flat side of the blade 13 rests against the side 20 of the can. It will now be found that the blade 13 is disposed below the rolled or erimped edge 18. lVhen the handles 8 and 9 are retracted, the head 16 is moved upward, the sharp edge of the blade 13 wedging between the roll of the edge 18, opening the same from the side of the can, until the metal composing the edge is caught between the shearing edge of the jaw 12 and the cutting edge of the blade 13. At this point, it will be found that the sharp point or junction of the curved edge of the blade and the straightedge 17 thereof is presented torthe metal. This point is rigidly forced through the metal, when thereafter the curved edge, rising, cuts the metal forwardly. The tool is now employed in a manner usual to pliers or cutting tools of analogous use and construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A can opener, having a plurality of pivotally connected handles; a head mounted on one of said handles, having a laterallyextending bracketed jaw partly separated from said head to form a channel thercbctween, the edge of said jaw adjacent said channel forming a shearing member; and a blade laterally extended from the end of the other of said handles to enter said channel, said blade havipg a cuttingedge to regname to this specification in the presence of ister wlth the shearmg edge of said brackettwo subscribing Witnesses.
ed jaw, the cuttin e ge of said blade resting normally inside of said channel and JOAO BAPTISTE LOUREIRO' above said shearing edge of said bracketed VVicnessesa WILLIAM Ross Cox,
In testimony whereof I have signed my LEPIGUINO.
