Be. it known t a I, GE R E. E rm irr- I-IQFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuyahoga Falls, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, havev invented a new and useful, Penholder; and I dohereby declare. the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tov make and use the same.
This invention, relates to. new and useful pen-holder.
As one of the objects of the. invention, it is the aim to construct the. pen point clamping tube in. one piece, which is adapted to he le P n PQ n b twe the tu e 31 9 119 stick.
' Another object ot the invention is to, provide a, reversible clamping tube.
Further, it is an object of the invention to provide a device or clamping tube for holding pens of varying thicknesses.
Another object ofthe, invention is. to, pro- Vide slots at the end of said. clamping tube, said slots are of difierent lengths, and arranged in staggered relations.
As a further object of the inventionis the provision of spring arms at both, ends of the. clamping tube, the spring arms at one end being at right angles or in staggered relation with those. 9f the oppositev end.
Another object of the. invention, is the provision Off]. stickhaving a reduced portion, at one part of which reduced portion, the diameter thereof is increased, whereby the spring arms of either end of the clamping tube are spread apart, or may frictionally engage the portion of increased; diameter, to hold thetube in place.
Further, another object, is the. provision of an annular shoulder atone end of said reduced portion, in order to limit the tube, when being slipped or telescoped, on the stick. p
A further object of the invention is the provision of another shoulderupon said stick, to limit the penpoint, when being in-' serted between the tube and the stick. 1
A further object of the invention is the provision of an inexpensive, durable, simple, and desirable practical pen-holder, and one which can be easily cleaned, and the parts thereof disassembled readily.
In the drawings there are disclosed certain features of construction, but in practical fields these features may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed. v j
'The invention comprises further, features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings; Figure 1 is a View in perspective, showingthe improved pen holder constructed. in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a: sectional view on line 2 2 of part of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail viewof the clamping tube.
Referring more particularly to-the drawingsl designates the pen-holder stick, which tapers, as shown, at one end, while the other end is provided; with a reduced portion .2, and a, shoulder 3 adjoining one end of the reduced portion, This, reduced portion at 'one end; from substantially a to Z) is of a larger diameter in cross section, than the part between a and the end of the holder. This part between a and, Z) constructed so that the spring arms 5 (which are provided owing to the provision of the slots 6 may engage therewith frictionally, in, order to holdthe clamping tube against die-Placement. When the spring arms 5 engage said enlarged part of said. reduced portion, they are spread apart slightly, asfdisclosedin Fig. 2 clearly. A slight distance beyond thatportion designated by the letter a, the reduced portion is, provided with an, annular shoulder 7 and from this shoulder 7 the reduced portion tapers slightly as shown, so that a pen point 8 may easily enter between the tapered end of said reduced portion and the arms 9, yet frictionally enough, as to hold the point securely in position. These arms 9 are provided, owing to the construction of the slots 10.
The clamping tube is designed to. be con structed of any suitable spring metal, in order to lend resiliency or yieldability to the arms 5 and- 9. The arms'of either end of the tube are designed for the purpose. of holding either the tube or the pen point in place. In other words, the tube is reversible, and in that case pen points, varying in length as well as in thickness may be clamped firmly in place. For example, if the tube is adjusted, so that the arms 5 are used for clampingthe pen point, the point cannot be inserted very far in the holder, be cause of the shortness of said arms, and

yieldability is greatly lessened. Inother words, the nearer the pen point is inserted to the base of said spring arms 5, the less the said arms will yield at their base portions. The spring arms9 are designed for holding varying lengths of pen points, preferably the greater part of the longer pen points, while the arms 5 hold the shorter points. The arms of either end of the tube are long enough to engage the part between a and b of the holder, to hold the tube in place, or are long enough to hold a penpoint against the lower end of the holder. The object for making the slots and the arms at right angles to one another, or in staggered relations, is to lessen the chances of weakening the clamping tube, which would occur if the slots and the arms alined with one another.
From the foregoing it is to be ascertained that there has'been devised a novel, simple, efficient and inexpensive and desirable practical pen-holder, and one which may be disassembled readily for cleaning the same.
. The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 2- 1. In combination, a stick having a reduced-portion, a part of which at one end is of one diameter and terminating in a shoulder, while another part is of a smaller diameter at the. other end, said smaller portion terminating in a shoulder, a clamping tube telescoping said reduced portion and provided with spring arms at both ends, the spring arms of one end adapted to frictionally engage the larger portion, while the spring arms of the other end are adapted to clamp a pen point to the smaller part of the reduced portion.
2. In combination, a stick having a reduced portion, a part of which at one end is of one diameter and terminating in a shoulder, while another part is of a smaller diameter at the other end, said smaller portion terminating in a shoulder, a clamping tube telescoping said reduced portion and provided with spring arms at both ends,"the spring arms of one end adapted to frictionally engage the larger portion, while the spring arms of the other end are adapted to clamp a pen point to the smaller part of the reduced portion, the first shoulder adapted to limit the clamping tube, while the second shoulder limits the pen point.
3. In combination, a stick having a reend may be adapted for clamping. a pen duced portion, a part of which at one end is of one diameterand terminating in a shoulder, while another part is of a smaller diameter at the other end, said smaller portion terminating in a shoulder, a clamping reversible tube telescoping said reduced portion and provided with spring arms of different lengths and corresponding slots at both ends, the spring arms at one end being at right angles or in staggered relations to those of the opposite end, the spring arms of one end adapted to frictionally engage the larger portion, while the spring arms of the otherend' are adapted to clamp a pen point to the smaller partofthe reduced portion, the firstg shoulder adapted to limit the clamping tube, while the second shoulder limits the pen point. 7
4;. In combination, a pen holder stick having a reduced portion, a clamping tube having spring arms at both ends telescoping the reduced port-ion, said clampingtube being reversible, in order that the arms of either point, the spring arms of one end being of diiferent lengths to and arranged at right angles to the arms of the opposite end, the arms of either end being long enough to en gage the reduced portion tohold the tube in place. v
5. In combination, a pen holder stick having a reduced portion, a clamping tube having spring arms at both ends telescoping the reduced portion, said clamping tube being reversible, in order that the arms of either end may be adapted for clamping a pen point, the spring arms of one end being of different lengths to and arranged at right angles to the arms .of the opposite end, the arms of either end being long enough to engage the reduced' portion to hold the tube in place, the pen holder stick having means to limit the clamping tube in telescoping the same on the reduced portion, while the reduced portion is provided withmeans to limit a pen point when inserting the same between the spring arms at one end and the reduced portion.
In testimony whereof I have signedmy name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
