To all wh cm 2'75 may concern 'a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full,- clear, concise, and exact description,
reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forminga part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars.

The draft gear 24 comprises a shell 25, friction mechanism 26 and springs 27, 27 within the shell, the sprmgs being forwardly seated against the friction mechanism and rearwardly seated against "the friction shell, the parts within the shell being held in assembled position by the connecting rod 28 extending through the friction mechanism at its forward end, and beward movement of the holder '35.

The rear face of the saic slot 34 is preferably convex from side to side. The forward and rear faces 36 and 37 respectively of the preliminary spring holder35 are preferably convex, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The rear face of the preliminary spring holder 35 is seated against the inner end of the draft yoke 12, and preferably against the filler block 21.
The inner forward face 38 of the box-like member 30 at the rear of the shell is preferably concave so as to permit the preliminary springs 33, to be forwardly flexed on forpreliminary spring \Vithin each slot 32 at the sides of said box-like member '30 and along the rearward face thereof, and removed from the end of said slot like member there is' provided in preferable construction a reinforcing vertically disposed bolt 39, which preferably passes through the said box-like member, each bolt being provided at its one end with a head 40 and at its other end with a nut 41.
The preliminary spring holder is seated against the inner end of the draft yoke at its rear face, and on forward movement of the draft yoke in pulling movement of the draft rigging the preliminary springs33, passing through the preliminary spring holder 35 are drawn forwardly intermediate the ends of the springs, the ends being seated, as hereinbefore described, within the slots 32, 32.
The box-like member 30 is laterally provided with slots 43 through which the springs are inserted within the said boxlike member in assembling the parts of the gear. The flexing movement of the springs is limited when the forward face 36 of the spring holder 35 engages the rear end of the the car in connection with which the same is employed.
I claim 1. In a draft rigging, in combination, a
draw bar, a draft yoke, stop members, a
shell, compression resisting parts within the shell, a preliminary spring comprising flexible plates, a preliminary spring holder, the said shell being rearwardly provided with a box like recess to receive the preliminary spring, further recesses at either side of said box-like recess to receive the ends of the preliminary spring, and hold said ends in a fixed position, a preliminary spring holder engaging the preliminary spring within said recess, said preliminary spring holder being in engagement with the draft yoke.
2. In a draft-rigging for railway cars, in combination, a draft yoke and a draft gear, the draft gear having a shell, compression resisting parts within the shell, the said shell being rearwardly provided with a boxlike opening, fiat springs within said open sprin ing, and means of securing said flat springsat either end, a preliminary spring holder, a slot in the same through which the said flat springs are passed, the said 'preliminary spring holder engaging with the-draft yoke on forward movement of said yoke.
3. In combination, a draft yoke and a draft gear, the draft gear comprising a shell, compression resisting members within the shell,a box-like member at oneend of said shell, slots within said hox-like member, a preliminary spring engaging within said slots, a preliminary spring holder n engagement with said springs, said preliminary spring holder comprising a box like member provided with a slot to receive said preliminary spring, said preliminary spring holder being in engagement with the draft yoke in forward movement thereof.
4. In a draft gear, a shell, compression resisting parts within the shell, a preliminary sprmg and a preliminary spring holder, the shell being provided at one end with a box-like member, means within said member for engaging the preliminary spring at either end, a preliminary spring holder, a slot through said holder adapted to receive the preliminary spring tl'ierethrough, the
rear face of said slot being curved to permit the flexing of said spring therein, the said g holder being adapted to engage with the draft yoke.
