Description

I H. HERMELIN.
MACHINE FOR SHARPENING SAFETY RAZOR BLADES.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 5 1912M Patented Sept. 16, 1913.
2 sHEBTs-sHEET 1.
5 woe nto'c .one roll will act upon the blade or blades gears intermesh, and meshing with oneof' the gears 25, as the gear on the shaft 22, is a larger driving gear 26. This gear is supported on a lug or stud 27 forming la part of the clamping bracket 11, and on said gear 26 is a handle 28 by which the gear 26 may be rotated. It will be evident that as the gear 26 is rotated by the handle 28, the two gears 25 and the two rolls 23 will be also rotated.
To hold the razor blades and to permit adjustment thereof in order that the blades may be sharpened properly by the rolls, various means may be employed. As shown a clamping or holding member 29 is provided. This member may be of steel, brass or any suitable springy metal and has a clamping body portion 30 which is substantially U-shaped in cross-section, as shown best in Figs. 5, 8 and 9. The member 29 at the upper end is provided with two substantially L-shaped arms 31 extending on opposite sides thereof and these arms are fastened at their upper ends to pendent parts 32 of a plate-like member 33. This member 33 is substantially U-shaped in plan to pro vide an open part 34 to permit access to the clamping body portion30 of the member 29, and said member 33 is slotted, as at 35, for
the stem of a screw 36 to adapt said member 33 to be rigidly clamped to the part 20 of the bracket 18, and. to be adjusted laterally thereof by means of the screw 36 and slot 35. The arms 31 are adapted to be engaged by the threaded ends of screws 37 and these screws have their body portions passed through slots 38 to adapt the arms 31 with their body portion to be adjusted toward or from the rolls 23 and transversely of the adjustment of the plate-like member 33. The body portion 30 of the member 29 at the lower end is provided with an L-shaped foot 39 having a plurality of slots 40 55 members are hinged together at their upper through which extend the screws 41 or other fastening means. The screws 41 have their threaded stems engaging threaded apertures in theplate or member 42. This plate or member is provided with a slot 43 through which pass screws 44. The screws 44 and slot,43 permit adjustment of the plate or member 42 in a direction similar to the adjustment of the plate 33, and the slots 40 and screws 41, as well as the screws 37 and slot 38, permit adjustment of the clamping member 29 .toward and from the rollers, so that'said clamping member may be adjusted in two directions.
A. blade holder 45, Figs. 2 and 5 to 9, is provided. This holder in the form shown comprises two members 46 and 47. These edges by the hinge 49 so that the said members may be closed or opened for'the insertion and removal of the safety razor blades. The members 46 and 47 are bowed or enlarged, as at 50, so as to fit Within the and have straight blade-like parts 52. The parts 52 may be providedwit-h openings 53 in oneof the members, as the member 47, and the .member 46 may be provided with intrg'ral spring tongues 54 opposed to the openings 53 serving to assist in holding and clamping the razor blades. In some blades as manufactured, an opening is provided and to assist in holding blades of this kind in position one of the members of the blade holder, as the member 47, may have a projection or pin 55 which is adapted to pass through the opening of the razor-blade. into the opening 56 in the member 46 of the blade holder, thus positioning the blade as shown in Figs. 6 and 9. The lower part of the blade holder may have depressed portions 57 and integral tongues or parts 58 which serve as backings for the razor blade, as shown in Figs. 6 and 8. The razor blade 59 shown in these latter figures has a backing which same, and the blade is engaged by the de pressed spring portions 57 serving to hold the same in position.
In practice the blade holder may be made to hold one or two blades as desired, though usually only one, and said blade is arranged at the upper or lower portion according to the character of the blade. That is, the clamping and holding means differs according to the character or make of the blade. The holder, when one or more of the blades are positioned, as shown in Figs. 6 to 9, 1s inserted lengthwisw from above into the body portion 30 of the clamping member 29. The body portion 30 having its sides yielding, will clamp and force the members 46 and 47 of the blade holder together and will sustain the blade in its proper position. The clamping member 29 may be adjusted in to properly position the blades with respest to the rollers 23, and when properly positioned, the said rollers with the sharpening of the gears 25 and 26. The blade will be first acted on by one roller and then by the material on the other roller, but not both at the same time otherwise it would be difiicult to adjust the rollers in such a Way as to give a sharp edge to the blade. When the blades have been acted on by the material, as the canvas at the upper part ofthe roller, the blade holder may be removed by inserting the fingers through 'the opening 34 of the member 33, and when inverted will place the blade which was uppermost in a position curved part 51 of the clamping member 29- edges by the hinge 48 and at their lower rests against the tongues 58 to position the two directions as already explained so as members or material are rotated by means for example.
