T all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM VON WoLrr- RADT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Window- Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a Window construction and a mechanism for opening and I closing the windows.
The construction is more particularly intended for use where the windows are inaccessible, and the object is to provide an effective construction which will accomplish its purpose, employing a minimum number of parts, and further to provide a construc tion in which the windows may be. hinged along one side, preferably along their longest side to the casings, and be permitted a full 90 opening with respect to the cases in which they are mounted.
Generally speaking, the invention comprises the elements and combination thereof set forth in the accompanying claims.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing the windows and mechanism in position in a wall structure; andFig. 2 is a central longitudin'al section upon Fig. 1.
The casings of the windows are indicated at 1, and the windows, or more particularly Obviously the sash may be of any desired construction, and will be hinged to the casings with which they cooperate, preferably along their outer longitudinal sides, these hinges being indi- 40 cated at 8 in the drawings.
Upon the inside of the casings, that is to say, within the building, there will extend from each sash a diagonal brace indicated at 4. This brace will be secured to the sash 1 upon the side thereof which is opposite to the side of the sash which is hinged'to the casing, and will extend rearwardly from the window at an angle which, in thepresent instance, is shown at substantially 30. The brace 4 is maintained in its position by two auxiliary braces represented at 5 and 6. The auxiliary brace 5 extending between substantially the central portion of the hinged side of the sash and the brace 41:,
i while the auxiliary brace 6 is secured to brace 4 and extends to one extremity of the window,that is to say, either the top or the bottom of the sash and is there secured. In practice I usually employ a small channel or angle for forming the brace 4.
It will be understood that each of the sashes forming the series of windows which are usually placed together is provided with one of these angularly extending braces 4. At their inner ends these braces are all joined to a rod 7 by a joint which permits articulation of the brace 4 with respect to the rod. In the present instance I have provided adjustable sleeves 8 through which the rod 7 extends, the sleeves being secured upon the rod in proper position, so that the end of each brace 4 will cooperate with a sleeve, the braces 41: being pivotally connected to the aforesaid sleeves which will. permit of relative movement.
The rod 7 is moved in any desired manner, and for the purpose I have shown acable 9 which is secured to the rod at a point indicated at 10. This cable extends over sheaves such as indicated at 11 and 12,
' and is caused to extend toward the floor of the building manipulation.
In placing such windows and mechanism for operating them, as here disclosed, in a building, I would plan to place each successive section of windows such that the windows will open in opposite directions. This will then permit the use of certain sect-ions to the exclusion of others, when the wind is blowing in certain directions where the tendency of the wind would be to open the Windows. That is to say, it is more desir able that the wind when strong beat against the exterior of the windows rather than to blow through the open portions, for the reason that the wind thus blowing through the window is very apt to result in inconvenience to the occupants within the building. It will be seen therefore that the ability to open sections of windows in opposite directions is of a decided advantage.
The particular mounting of the sets of windows in the manner herein indicated permits of a full and complete ventilation being obtained without admitting the wind to blow through the building.
Having described my invention, I claim: 1. The combination with a window hinged along one side, a brace secured upon said window upon the side opposite to that which is hinged, said brace extending diagona ly to be within easy reach for from the window, an operating rod extendand pull in the opening and closing of the window, auxiliary braces extending from points between the ends of the said brace to the window, and means for moving said rod.
