WATER-TIGHT HATCH FOB BOATS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIsON H. HAYES, a citizen of the United'States of America, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water- Tight Hatches for Boats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
' The invention relates to hatch coversfor boats, and has for its object the obtaining of a construction which can be easily and quickly openedor closed at any time and which in closed position is water-proof.
In the present state of the art hatch coverings formed of wood and alsoof metal are employed, but where collapsible hatch coverings are employed seepage through the joints has interfered with the construction being water-proof. As a consequence if it is" desired to render these hatch coverings perfectlytight it is necessary to batten them down or to cover them with some water'- proof material such as tarpaulin. This involves a considerable expense each time the batches are so water-proofed as well as the inconvenienceoccasioned by rendering the hatches temporarily inaccessible.
It is the object of the present invention to avoid these objections by providing a construction of telescoping hatch cover, ca-
pableof being drawn back at any time to uncover the hatch,and of such construction that when-closed all water will be excluded from the hatch opening. '1 j To this end the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.

The hatch covers are formed ofa series of sections F which are preferably of anarch form to produce a drainage pitch from center to sides At their ends each section is provided wlth a down-turned "flange Gr resting upon the guide flange E on the coam ing and slidable thereupon. The adj acent sections F are proportioned to telescope with each other, so that when all are withdrawn they will occupy a space but slightly greater than that required for a single section, so opening will be, uncovered.
To form a water-tight joint between the adjacent sections a tongue and groove engagement is provided, preferably formed by an anglebar H secured to an upwardly bent flange I at one edge of the section F, the
lower flange'H of said angle extending beneath and parallel to the cover to form a returned bend. At the opposite edge of the 7 section an angle flange J is arranged in reverse position or so as to extend above'the cover and parallel thereto, and the arrange mentv is such that the flanges H and J "of adjacent cover sections F will, in the extended position of the latter, interlock with each other and form a double breakvjoint. To takecare of any seepage of water which might force its way through this joint a drain channel L is arranged at the edge of the inner section, and which extends beyond the inner co'aming with its ends open to discharge into the chamber D therebetween.
This channel may be formed of a channel beam "which is riveted to the angle J and down-turned flange M on the section F, and in addition to its drainage function it forms a structural element in imparting strength and rigidity to the cover.

The combination with a hatchway coaming provided with a drainage, of a hatch cover comprising a series of telescoping, overlapping plates engaging the walls of said coaming, break-joints between the over- 10 lapping portions of adjacent sections in the extended position thereof, and drainage means adjacent to said joints for conducting the seepage therethrough to the drainage for the coaming.
