To all whom it may comer Be it known that I, JOHN H. KULow, residing at Buffalo, in the county ofErie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Point Holders, of which the following is a specification.

Clhisinvention relates to pen holders and it particularly has for its purpose to provide a simple and inexpensive device cspseially designed for being used in connection with the pen receiving tube of the ordinary or conventional style of pen holders, and which provides for inserting the pen vpoint with case and without bending and for firmly gripping every portion of the pen shank to hold it against wiggling or becoming loosened.

With other objects in view that will hereinaitcr appear, my invention comprehends pen point gripper formed of a single piece of thin resilient metal bent to shape for being inserted into and frictionally engaging an outer tube or holding sleeve at a plurality of points whereby. it is held against lateral motion within the holder, and for 'firmly gripping the opposite edges as well as the upper and under faces of the pen shank; other means being included in the complete make-up of my'pen point holder,

for securing the pen point gripper against slipping forwardly and out of the outer tube or holding sleeve, all of which will be hereinafter described, specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanyin drawing, in'which:

Figure 1 is a p an view of the blank sheet from which my pen gripping device is bent to shape. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the 40 pen gripper in its complete or bent-up shape.

Fig. 3 is a similar view, the gripper being shown as inserted in the outer holding sleeve or tu e, the retaining lip or member that 'holds the pen gripping device from working out of the holding sleeve or tube' being shown at its bent out position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view, simi ar to Fig. 3, the retaining lip being shown bent own to hold the gripper device in the tube, a pen point so being also shown as applied to the holder.

Fig. 5 is a cross section of my pen holder taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a similar view on the line 6-6 on Fig. 4.

, In the practical application of my inven- 65 tion the pen gripping device is formed from a single sheet of metal, the blank beingof rectangular shape, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. The blank is bent up at its opposite ends at two parallel points indicated by the dotted lines 3 -3 and its middle portion 41 is bent up to form a substantially tubular body 5 of uniform shape the full width of the blank. The opposite ends of the blank are first bent outwardly on the lines 3-43 to form short side flanges 6 6, the latter being curved substantiall parallel with the adjacent portions of the tubular bodv 5. The aforesaid opposite ends after being bent to form the side flanges 6 are then bentback upon themselves to form the gripper flanges 7, and these while being in a plane substantially parallel withthe flanges 6, owing to the resiliency of the metal when the gripper is inserted in an ordinary pen holder tube or sleeve 8, spreadand frictionally engage the said tube 8, it being understood that the two flanges 7 provide a plurality cl tube onaging surfaces, one at each side of a central bearing or gripping surface 9 caused by the tubular body 5, seating on the bottom oi the tube 8, such arrangement of frictional bearings serving to positively hold the gripper device against lateral movement within the tube 8, after being once inserted.

It will be noticed from Figs. 2, 5 and 6, the blank body 1 is so bent that the ends thereof approach and nearly contact' and that the two sets of flanges 6 and 7 form a pen shank receiving socket 10 of such width that they firmly grip the edges of the pen shank 11 and the entire top and bottom faces thereof, and owing to the resiliency of the socket portions of the grippertho'tension of the opposite sets of flanges 6 and 7 causes them to firmly grip the-p8n shank edges as well as causing the gripper device to frictionally. engage the tube 8, and at the same time clamp against the upper and under faces of the pen shank.

By reason of forming the gripper device in the manner stated and shown, the same may be made up in sizes for use in connection with any of the ordinary tube equipped. pen holders.

Inmanufacturing my pen holder, I form the tube 8 with an extended lip 80 at tho forward end and this, after the gripper device is inserted 1S bent back into the tube and over the lower front end of. the said 1 to form a tubular bottom piece forengag-- ing the bottom of the handle tube, two opposing sets of resilient flanges that form a pen shank receiving socket and two portions for frictionally engagingthe upper part of the handle tube.

2. As an improvement in pen holders, a handle tube, a pen gripping device adapted for insertion in the said handle tube, the

' said device being shaped to form a tubuhr shaped body for engaging the bottom of the handle tub the ends of the said body terminating in two opposing sets of resilient flanges bent upwardly from the body and upon themselves whereby to form v a pen receiving socket and two portions for frictionally engaging the upper part of the handletube, and means-on the tube for Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the holding the said device from moving out of the said tube.

3. As an improvement in pen holders a handle tube, a. pen gripping device adapted for insertion in the said handle tube, the said device being shaped to form a tubular shaped body for engaging the bottom of the handle tube, the endswof the said body terminating in two opposing sets of resilient flanges bent upwardly from the body and upon themselves whereby to form a penreceiving socket and two portions for frictionally engaging the upper part of the handle tube, and means on the tube for holding the said device from moving out of the said tu be, the said means consisting of a tongue fd'med on the outer end of the handle tube bendable over and into the tubular shaped bottom portion of the grip ping device.
