MELVIN- BANGROFT, 0F lMONTAG'rUE, MASSACHUSETTS, AASSIGNOR TO GEORGE F. RICHARDSON & OO., 0F' SAME PLAGE.
Letters .Pa-tent No. 107,215,- datecl September 13, 1870. f
IMPRQVEMENT 1N EXTENSION TABLE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To att whom. tt-.incty concern: y I
Be v1t known that I, MELVIN BANcnoFfr, of Montague, in the county of Franklin and State of Massa#A chusetts, have invented a new and improved Extension Table; and I do herebyv declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art "to make and use the same, reference being had to' the accompanying drawing forming part of this specilcation.
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section- The invention consists in the application to an ex-v l tension table of a spring drum and baud, the band being secured with 'one endA to one part of the table, and with the other end to the drum, which is h ungto the other part of the table. The. spring 'drum will always tend to hold the band tense, audio draw the partsY of the table together. Y
The invention consists, also, in the application to one swinging leaf, of a pawl, by which the band will bc stretched vtensewlienever said leaf .is swung up.
A B, in the drawing, are the two extension parts or main supports of an extension table.
In the part A is Xed a shaft, C, which contains a loose drum, D, that is connected with a spiral spring, E, for winding it up.
The drum D carries also 'a ratchet-wheel, a.
purpose specified.
To the outer edge ofthe ydrum D is secured one end of a iiexible band, F, vmade of metal or other suitable material.
The other end of the band F is secured to a spring,
Gr, that is fastened to the part B of the table.,
lo the part A is hinged aieaf, H, which carries a concealed pawl, b, that fits over the ratchet-wheel a.
When the table is extended or contracted, tbevband will unwind fi'om or be wound upon the drum, the
spring E serving to wind it1 on whenever the slack is produced.
' Then the table has been properly adjusted, the
leafH is swung up and turns the drum', so as to stretch the band tight, and thereby'rmly draw the A several parts of the table 4close together. The table will, therefore, be' firm and substantial, and notas loose asextensin tables usuallyrare.
' The spiing Gr serves to make the action of the band yielding, and prevents it from being violently strained. The pawl b may, if desired, be attached to any other besides a drop-leaf.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In combination with the leaf H, the pawlb, ratchet a, drum D, and shaft G, as herein described,
' for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the shaft'G, druln D, coiled spring E', ratchet a, pawl b, and band F, with the parts A B and leaf H, as described and for the purpose specified. Y
'3. The combination of spring G with shaft O, drum D, coiled spring E, ratchet a, pawl b, band F, parts A B, and leaf H, as shown and described, and for the '-ivitnesses: L MnLviN BANGROFT.
