LUNCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atont ed Sept. 2, 91.3.
Application filed Jane 26, 1512. Serial No. 705,953.
lie it known that i", i' tn'riiua ,ltooun, a itiicen oi the United States. residing at iewport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode l sland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lunch-Boxes, (it which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lunch boxes, and refers particularly to a workmans or laborers lunch box, one object being the produetitm ot a box which will convenienttv and separately accommmlate the food, eating utensils, such as kniit'e, fork, and spoon, and the beverage, in order that a sanitary and convenient article of this character will be provided.
Another object ct my invention is the provision of a lunch box wnich will be at small and compact size and at the same time have ample space for the purpo:-:e; which will protect the contents and permit ready access; and which can be produced at a small price, insuring a desirable and practical lunch box for the desired purpose.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a lunch box embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure t represents a perspective view of the lunch box closed. Fig. :2 represents a similar view with the hinged member thrown back, or the box open. Fig. 3 repre sents a detail view of the division wall or partition.
deterring by numeral to the drawings, in which similar numerals o't' retercncc denote correspoiuling parts in the several views 'lhe numeral '1 designates the front wall or section ot the box, which is formed with the bottom 2 and the short vertical t'lap S which forms a part of the rear vertical wall, and to the vertical. 'llap 53 by means oi the hinge connection 4t, is joined the hinged section or member which provides the rear vertical wall 5, the top wall or cover 6, and the vertical overlapping flange or flu p 7, which is termed with an opening 8, to engage the spring catch or keeper 9, mounted in the front wall of the box. From this construe tion, it will be noted that the main portion of the box consists of the section forming the front wall, bottom and flap forming a part of the rear wall, and the hinged memher which provides the rear wall, top or cover, and securing flap, thus producing a very simple, cheap and durable construction, and the edge 10 ot? the hinged section is crimped and inoloses the continuous reint'orcing or strengthening wire .11, which extends entirely around the hinged member Forming the keeper engaging portion 12, as well as the pintle or hinge rod 13. Also the edge 14 of the rigid section is crimped and interlocks with the bent edge or flange 15 of the vertical end walls to, thus making a complete box rectmtaclc of great strength and within the box or food chamber at a suitable place is the vertical division wall 17, provided with tongues 18, which engage slits it), and being bent serve to retain the division wall in place. This division wall thus provides in the box a food chamber .80, and a beverage containing chamber 21., in which a bottle or jar will nicely tit, and the vertical division wall 17 is of sutlicient height: to permit its upper portion to be bent or shaped to provide the receptacle or compartment 22, to receive knite, fork, and spoon and the material 23 around the top or edge is bent to receive the strengthening wire 524,, which passes entirely around the top of the box.
The. box is provided with the flat handle 25, mounted in the top and having a sliding movement to close against the top when not in use.
it will thus be seen that my box provides three chambers or compartments which are separate and in which may be placed the food, the eating utensils, and the bottle carrying the beverage, the short tlap torming a part ot the rear wall also serving to retain the bottle in placing and preventing it from movement or Falling out, and that a convenient and sanitary box is provided.
it will also be apparent that while the box stores and preserves the contents in a clean and sanitary condition; it separates the food and makes the articles easily accessible when needed; and also that the box can bemade o't any desired size and will prove ctlicicnt and practical in every particular.
1. A. receptacle, comprising a rigid and a hinged section, a vertical divisional wall secured in the rigid section by means of inte gral tongues projected therefrom, said wall being bent over upon itself and thence ontwardly at right angles to provide a horizontally disposed ledge and terminating in an upwardly bent wall formed with a flange for engagement with the edge of the rear wall of the rigid section, whereby a large deep receptacle or compartment, a narrow shallow compartment, and a narrow deep compartment are provided.
2. A lunch box, consisting of the rigid member forming the front, bottom, and rear vertical flap, the member hinged to said flap and forming the rear wall, top, and retaining flap, the keeper on the front wall engaging said flap, the end walls, and the division wall secured to the end wall and bottom and formed with a horizontal receptacle, the edge being crimped and containing a strengthening wire and the end walls and rigid member being connected by an interlocking bend along their edges.
3. A lunch box, consisting of the rigid member forming the front, bottom, and rear vertical flap, the member hinged to said flap and forming the rear wall, top, and retaining flap, the keeper on the front Wall engaging said flap, the end walls, and the division wall secured to the end wall and bottom and formed with a horizontal receptacle, the hinged member being formed with a surrounding crimped edge, a wire inclosed in said crimped edge forming a strengthening medium, and a rod for hinging the cover to the flap along its upper edge, and a catch on the front flap of the cover formed by the wire and a contiguous opening to engage the keeper on the front wall.
4. A lunch bOX, consisting of the rigid member forming the front, bottom, and rear vertical flap, the member hinged to said flap and forming the rear wall, top, and retaining flap said flap having an opening, a keeper on the front wall engaging the opening on said flap, the end walls, the hinged member being formed with a surrounding crimped edge, a wire inclosed in sai crimped edge forming a strengthening me:
dium, and a rod for hinging the cover to the flap along the upper edge of said flap.
In testlmony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
