Description

Letters Patent No. 107,145, :lated September 6, 187 0.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these L ette'rs Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we., HonA'rIo WILLARD and PETER TaUNz, ot' Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State ot' Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture-Locks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lock for doors or other purposes,as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in Whichf Figure 1 is an inside view oi' the lock-plate;
Figure '2 is an edge view of' the same;
Figure 3 is an inside view of the lock, complete; and
Figure 4 is a view of the inner side of the key-hole plate.
A represents the lock-plate or box, of any desired dimensions, having the keyhole pin B screwed into it at a suitable point.
Thispilr passes through a spring, C, which is attaehed at one end to the lock-plate, and is provided with two arms, a a, projecting at right angles with the main part of' the spring and parallel with cach other, us shown in fig. 1.
On each side ofthe pin B, and at equal distance from the same, upon lock-plate, is secured a (lange or bar, I), one end ol' which is bent inward and the lower portion ol' thel thus bent end, Z1, is cut away, so that said llanges or bars form convenient guides for the bolt E. l
This bolt passes between the bars D D and under their ends b b, and is provided with a longitudinalslot through which the pin B projects.
From the outer end-.of this slot is another slot cut at right angles, and of such size that either oneof the arms a of the spring C may spring up into the same, and thus hold the bolt in position, whether it is locked or unlocked.
Upon the upper edges of the guides D D are ears which project through slots on the key-hole plate G, and pins then passed through 'said ears, by which means said plate is secured in position.
On the inside of the key-hole plate G 'is a small ward, d, which answers the purpose of pressing down the spring C, when locking or unlocking, by means of the key passing under it.
In the bolt E are circular grooves, e e, as shown in fig. 3, which grooves permit the key to pass entirely round in locking and'unlocking without interruption, and at the same time form a stop for the keyin such a manner that ,it is always in line with the key-hole, so that it can be readily and easily removed when locked or unlocked.
This lock may be used on both right and left-hand doors.
Having thus fully described our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bolt E, constructed as described, with right angular slots and circular grooves e e, arranged as shown, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. VIn combination with the bolt E, constructed with right angular slots and circular grooves e e, guide-bars D'D, and spring G, all arranged to operate substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HORATIO VVILLARD. PETER 'IRUN Z.
