IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING .COAT AND HAT-RACKS.

The Schedule referred to in vthese Letters Patent and making part of the Same same, reference being had tothe accompanying draw-- -ing making a part oi this specitication, in which-` IEigure l represents a frontview ot' three sections of the frame, spread ou t, to'be attached to the side of a hall, room, wardrobe, or railroad car.

Figure 2 shows the same, jacked up for packing and transportation.

'Ihe object ot' my invention is to manufacture and supply the public-with a neat, substantial,durable, and che'ap article of hat and clothes-rack and hooks, portable and very easily put up in any place, temporarily or permanently, as may be desired, either in raih'oad-cars, wardrobes, closets, halls, or rooms.

My invention consists in the construction of' the jointed l'ralnes with slots in their ends, for fitting the pivots made on the joints, so that the rack can be jacked up and packed closely for transportation, and be spread out andl put up speedily in any place desired. l

To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawing and the letters marked thereon.

The trame-work is made of sheet o1' plate metal, or any suitable material, cut or pressed out in 4such form as will admit of their being olded or jacked up into a. small compass.

The plates or bars A A have slots or openings cut Vout in both ends, so that they will easily slip onto the shanks of the buttons b b on the cast-metal hooks D E, which form the'rivets for holdingthe rack together, as also the pivots of the hinged fjoints c c, so that a cheap, convenient, substantial, and durable, as

Ywell as a portable hat and coat-rack, is produced-one that can be carried in a tra'tvelingbag, and put up for .use as may be desired; or quantitiesof them may be packed, for transportation, trade, and com-merce, in a' small space. I

The top hooks or brackets D D are cast with eyes (l fl to hang or fasten them up by, and are also provided with rings e e underneath thehooks, for the resting place of a cane or umbrella, they being secured to every alternate piece of the plates AA which compose the frame by the buttons b b and a single rivet cast outhe hook.

The 'short lower hooks -E E are secured to the frame in the same manner, the plates A A being provided with stops f f, to determine the distance the hooks are to be spread apart when put up.

When the plates A A are pnt together, the slots in their ends are forced or compressed together around the shank ot the buttons b b, so as to hold the parts securely together.

`What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

'Ihe slots in the ends ofthe plates A A, for sliding onto the Shanks of the buttons b b, cast on the hooks D and E, for tbrmingthe joints for portable coat and hat-racks, as shown and described.
