WINDOW-SHADE FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN W. THOMAS and MERTON A. Dnnrrr'r, citizens of the United States, residing at. Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window- Shade Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window shade fasteners, and its object is to provide a light, durable and inexpensive device of this kind which can be readily applied to a window casing without the use of screws, nails or other fastening means which would, of a necessity, mar the facing of the casing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind with a longi adjustable bracket, the said bracket adapted to support both the curtain roller and the shade roller, and the said bracket being provided with means whereby the same adjusts and locks the bracket in its adjusted position.
lVith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated the preferred form of the invention.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the fastener showing the positions of the parts before fastening to a window casing. Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the same showing the fastener secured to the casing. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the members forming the body of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the opposite member and the connections therefor. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the sliding brackets. Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken through the device when in its applied position upon a casing.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates an ordinary window casing and 2 the window shade fastener adapted to be secured to the casing. The fastener 2 comprises essentially a pair of sections or members designated respectively by the numerals 3 and 1. Each of the members 3 and 1 is preferably formed of a strip of suitable metal and each of the said members is formed with enlarged faces 5 positioned Specification of Letters Patent.

The ends of the said members are bent at right angles to thebody portions thereof, as designated by the numeral 6 and the extremities of the bent portions are formed with teeth 7 the latter being adapted to engage the side edges of the vertical members of the casing when the fastener is positioned thereon. Both of the enlarged ends or faces 5 of each of the sections 3 and 1 are constructed in a similar manner and the reference characters referring to one of the said members may be taken as equally applicable to the second member.
The enlargement 5 is formed with longitudinally extending substantially U-shaped 1 These walls are arranged in a spaced parallel plane to each other, as clearly illustrated 1n the several figures of the drawing. The
enlargements 5 are formed adjacent the transverse edges of the walls 8 and 9 and preferably central of the said edges with smaller substantially U-shaped slits. The metal between these smaller slits is bent The ears 10 and 11 are arranged at a direct right angle to the walls 8 and 9, and the space between the ears and the walls, which we will refer to as a compartment 12, is adapted for the reception of the longitudinally adjustable bracket 13.
The walls 8 and 9 are preferably inclined .toward each other, and the longitudinal edges 14 and 15 of the bracket 13 are likewise inclined so as to snugly engage the inner faces of the said walls. The body of the bracket 13 is straight and adapted to snugly engage within the compartment 12. The outer face of the bracket 13 is centrally provided with a longitudinally extending threaded bore 16, and the ears 10 and 11 are each provided with apertures 17 and 18. The apertures of the ears are adapted to register with the threaded bore 16 of the bracket and the numeral 19 designates a threaded headed member which is adapted to engage both the apertures of the ears and the threaded bore of the bracket. The headed portion of the element 19, when turned, will slide the bracket 13 toward either of the ears 10 or 11 and thereby adjust the said bracket longitudinally of the members 3 and 4 and as the bracket cannot be slid until the said member 1 is rotated, .it will be noted that the said bracket is effectively locked when once properly adjusted.
The reduced longitiu'linally extending portion '20 of the member 2 has its edges bent upon the body thereof as at 21 and 22 to provide a passage tor a bar 2?). The outer extremity oi the portion is formed with oppositely arranged ears 2s the same being provided with suitable perforations adapted for the reception of a pintle 25, whereby the 'am head 26 oi a lever 27 is secured. The cam 26 is adapted to contact with the bar 23 so as to retain the same within the passage provided by the inwardly bent D01" tions it and to retain the said bar in a longitudinally adjusted position. The extremity of the member 2?) is pivotally connected with a lever 28, and this lever has its lower portion extending below its pivotal connection with the bar 23 and said extension is pivoted as at 29 to the longitudinally extending reduced member of the section ot the fixture.
In positioning the fixture upon a casing the bar 23, being released by the cam 26. tree to slide within the passage of the section or member 3. The lever 28 is then swung upon its pivot 29 causing the bar 23, which is now rigidly connected with the member 3 by the rotation of the cam 26 in an opposite direction, to be drawn toward the extension 30 of the member 4. The lever 28 is securely retained upon the extension 80 through the medium of a suitable vatch 3i, and the operation of the lever firmly embraces the teeth -.t within the sides of the casing and retains the fastener thereon.
Each oi the brackets 13 provided ad- 'ja cent its outer end with spaced ears 32, the same being provided with suitable openings which are adapted for the reception of the nset extremities of a wire curtain pole sustaining element The inner ends of each of the bracket members are preferably integrally formed with. angular otlsets 3i, one of the same being formed with an annular opening while the opposite member is formed with a rectangular opening. and these openings are adapted to receive the fixtures upon the opposite ends of a shade bracket.
When the fixture has been positioned as above described. it will be noted that the manipulation of the tln'eaded elements it) will cause the brackets 13 to travel within their compartments 12 in either direction so that ditl'erent lengths of shades or curtain poles may be readily dispensed with.
Having thus fully descril'ied the invention. what we claim as new is 2 A fixture comprising a pair oit longitre dinally adjustable members, the outer ends of said members being enlarged. shade supporting means carried by and secured to said enlargement, the opposite ends of said members being reduced, the reduced portion of one of said members having its longitudinal edges bent inwardly and thence downwardly to form a passage- *ay, a bar mounted for sliding movement in said passageway. means carried at the forward end oi said passage-way for locking the bar therein. means pivotally connected to the terminal of the reduced portion ot. the other of said members and to the tree terminal of said bar for forcing the members toward each other, the pivotal connection of the bar with the latter mentioned means being at a point directly above the point of pivotal connection of the latter with the latter mentioned reduced member.
