Description

CCRITELIU--S E. DAVIS, VOli ST. HELENA, CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent No. 101,011, [lated September 6, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT 1N MAXI'LLARY coMrREss.
' The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part 0f the same- To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, CORNELIUS E. DAV1s,ot` St. Helena, county of Napa, State ot' California, have iuvented a Maxillary Compress; and I do hereby declare the bllowing description and. accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the artorscieuce to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without lfurther invention or experiment.
My invention relates to a device to be used for retaining in place and compressing against the gums .or iu the cavities, after teeth havebeen drawn, cot-- rhage.
1tis awell known fact that profuso and almost violent hemorrhage will frequently occur after a tooth has been extracted. This in many instances can only be arrested by filling the cavity with cot-ton or other-substance, aml keeping it in placeguntil coagulation. My device is for this purpose.
In order to more fully illustrate my invention ref'- -erence is hand to the accompanying drawing forming a partoll this specification, in, whichton or other substance employed to arrest hemor' A and A represent two similar sections of my con1-.y
press. These may be -inade of gold, silver, or other suitable material.
Each section consists of a small plate, thc corners ot' which may be rounded or not, as ldesired. Two opposite edges of this plate are turned up, as shown, forming flanges, a, which fit upon either side ofthe gums. lhe sections will then be in the shape oi' a trough, so as to titsnugly over the cavity.
In each' end of these sections is a slot, e, which extends lengthwise ofthe trough, and through which Small metallic or other bolts, or rivets, d, pass, 'and are secured by a small nut in the usual manner, in Y order to unite the sections. The slots serve to allow the compress to be adjusted to the space it is required to tit, or the edges of one section may be turned over so as to form a way in which the edges of another section can slide'back and4 forth, and thus receive adjustment- The eud sections C Dare made similar' 'to 4those above described, but have. secured tothem a suitable clasp, f, as shown. v
One or more ofthese sections can be used according to the necessities of the case. ,The slotealso permits ot' the compress being curved to tit the-gums at any point o any length, and when the clasps are secured around the two teeth nearest the bleeding ca'vity, the device will remain permanently fixed until they are released, thus allowing the cotton or other substance which it retains in the cavity to arrest the hemorrhage until coagulation takes place, and the bleeding is permanently stopped.
Having thus described my invention,
W hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is u A maxillary compress, consisting of one or more sections, A B,'rel ained in place by clasps f, 01' equivalent device, substantially as and tor the .purpose above described.
In witness that the above-described invention is claimed by me, I have hereunto set, my hand and seal.
CORNELIUS E. DAVIS. [11. s]
