GEORGE -A. JOHNSON, 0F CHICAGQ, ILLINGIS, ASSIGNOR TO "WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DBAFT-RIGGING FOR RAILYVAY-CAIR Application filed January 2, 1912;
T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Riggings for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars, and more particularly to draft yokes.
The object of my invention is to provide a connecting thimble for a draft yoke in'which the connecting rivets will have a double shear action instead of a singleshear action.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification Figural is a plan view partly in horizontal longitudinal section of a draft rigging for railway cars embodying my tive view of a portion of a draft yoke with the connecting thimble attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the outer box,
- andFig. i a perspective view of the inner boX constituting the said thimble.
In the drawings 5, 5 represent center sills, or parts of the car franue to which the draft rigging is attached, 6, 6 stop casting secured to said center sills, and having the forward stop shoulders 7, '7, rear stop shoulders 8, 8,
middle stop shoulders 9, 9, front limiting stop shoulders 10, 10, and rear limiting stop shoulders 11, 11. 12 represents a draw bar, 13 a draft yoke provided with a head 14 to receive the draw bar. 15 represents the coupler key. The cushioning members are in tandem arrangement within the yoke, and
comprise the front spring 16 and rear spring 17. Each spring is seated between a pair of followers 18, 18 for the front spring, and 19, 19 for the rear spring. All the foregoing parts are of'whll known construction in tandem spring draft riggings.
The novelty of my invention is found in the connecting thimble 20, which is secured to the upper and lower limbs 21 and 22 respectively of the draft yoke 13, and serves to prevent the spreading of the yoke, and as Specification of Letters Patent.

an abutment for theadjacent followers in buffing and pulling movement of the draft rigging, The connecting thimble comprises an outer hollow box-like member 23, and an inner hollow box-like member '24. The opening 25 through the outer box-like member is of suitable pass there through, and in preferable construction the inner upper and lower faces 26 and 27 respectively of said member ensize to permit the yoke to gage the outer faces of the limbs 21 and 22 of the draft yoke. The inner box-like member is of a suitable height to permit its insertion between the limbs 21, 22 of the draft yoke, and in preferable constructionthe end faces 27 and 28 thereof engage the inner faces of the limbs of the draft yoke. Also, in preferable construction the outer side faces 29 and 30 of the inner boX-like'member 24c engage the inner side faces 31 and 32 of the outer boxlike member 23. The two box- like members 23 and 24 are provided with registering vertical perforations 33, 33 to receive the rivets 34, 34, which pass through the said perforations, and suitable registering perforations 35, 35 provided in the limbs of the draft forming an outer web 36 and an yoke, thus inner web 37 between which each limb of the draft yoke is embraced, andthrough which the short connecting rivets 34c, 34 pass. It will be apparent that the rivets are thus given a double shear action, and enabling the employment of short rivets, which may be heated throng riveting.
The thimble being in two parts it will be clear that it can be assembled on the yoke after the yoke has been gibbed, or riveted,
or otherwise fastened to the -coupler.- In
to the yoke, the
case of necessity for repairs be applied thimble being in two parts an without the necessity of detaching the yoke from the coupler.
I claim 1. The combinatin with a draft yoke of a connecting thimble comprising a pair of box-like members, one adapted to pass around the limbs of the draft yoke and the other adapted to engage between said limbs. 2. The combination with adraft yoke of a nout, thus enabling perfect two pa rt connecting thimble comprising a around the limbs of the draft yeke, and en box-like member adaptedetq engage between inner member engaged between said limbs. the limbs of the yoke, and 5, further member 1 1 engaging the outer faces of said limbs.
