Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MIcrrAEL WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw- Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to saw clamps and particularly to that type of portable clamp adapted to be mounted removably upon the top of a bench or table, and foldable into relatively small compass when not in use. The invention has for its primary objects the provision of a clamp having simplified and improved means for taking care of the wear in the parts for operating the movable jaw; the provision of means whereby the movable jaw is held yieldingly in its operative position after being moved to such position; and the provision of improved and simplified operating means for the movable jaw of the clamp. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device with one of the jaws in section on the line II of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the plate carrying the movable jaw; Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the operating arm or lever, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of a modification.
The frame 1 of the device is of U-form as indicated in Fig. 3 and provided with the two sides or arms 2 and 3, the arm 2 carrying the movable jaw 4, and the arm 3 carrying the relatively fixed jaw 5. As is common in devices of this kind, the relatively fixed jaw 5 is provided with a pair of projecting arms 6 and 7 (Figs. 1 and 3), which arms have at their ends the down-turned spike portions 8 adapted to be driven into the top of the bench or table upon which the device is mounted. In order to still further steady the device upon the table or bench, the slot 9 is provided at the lower portion of the frame 1, which slot is adapted to receive a nail or screw which secures the arm 3 firmly against the side of the bench and prevents its lateral movement.
In order that the device may occupy a minimum amount of space when not in use, the jaws 4 and 5 between which the saw blade A is clamped are pivoted upon the arms 2 and 3 so that these jaws may be folded into parallelism with the arms 2 and 3 when the device is removed from the work bench. The mounting of the jaw 5 pivotally is secured by means of the pin 10 which is screw threaded into the arm 3 at its outer end and held against rotative movement by means of the lock nut 11. The inner end of this pin 10 is riveted over as indicated at 12 and the jaw 5 is swiveled for free pivotal movement upon this end of the pin 10. This method of mounting the jaw 5 is advantageous in that it permits of an adjustment with respect to the movable jaw 4. The cam or other mechanism employed in other apparatus of this character for moving the movable jaws wears more or less in time, so that the device becomes ineffective to properly clamp a saw blade, and the provision of an adjustment for the 5 gives a means for compensating for this wear in the operating mechanism of the movable jaw.
The jaw 4 is carried by a plate 13 which plate is pivotally supported upon the arm 2 by means of the pin 14. The connection between the plate'l3 and the jaw 4 is secured by means of the headed pin 15, which pin 15 is riveted at its inner end 16 in the arm 4. The end of the plate 13 opposite the head of the pin 15 is recessed, and in this recess is a spring 17 which bears against the head of the pin, thus causing the jaw 4 to yieldingly engage the upper end of the plate 13. As indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the face of the jaw 4 is provided with the projections 18 which engage corresponding recesses in the face of the plate 13 when the jaw 4 is in horizontal or operative position. By this means, the jaw 4 is yieldingly retained in horizontal position ready for use and when once brought to this position, stays there until the device is used, thus eliminating the inconvenience incident to the ordinary apparatus using a swinging jaw, wherein it is necessary to bring the jaw to horizontal position each time a smv blade is clamped in position. In order to increase the extent of the bearing recess in which the projection 18 fits, the projecting lugs 19 are provided, such lugs projecting out from the sides of the plate 13 a suitable distance. By this device the operation of the clamp is made as convenient as with a device having a non-rotative jaw, and at the same time the advantage incident to the folding feature is retained.
The plate 13 carrying the jaw a is operated by means of the lever 20 (Figs. 5 and 6), which lever is provided with a perforation at 21 for receiving a pivot pin, and carries at one side thereof a cam pin 22 upon which is mounted an anti-friction roller 23. As indicated in Fig. 4, the plate 13 is provided with an angular L-shaped slot 24:, and it is in this slot 2 1 that the cam pin 22 on the operating lever works. The lever 20 is mounted in position by means of a pivot pin 25 which extends through the perforation 21 in the lever and is mounted at its end in the arm 2, the outer end of such pin being supported by means of a bracket 26 integral with the arm 2. It will be seen that the slot 2 1 is so shaped that it will receive the pivot pin 25 and provide clearance space therefor in the operation of the cam pin 22 in the vertical portion of the slot.
Fig. 7 illustrates in plan view a modification to take the place of the interlocking means 18 and 19 (Figs. 1 and 2). Due to the difficulty of casting to an exact fit, the jaws t and 5 do not always exactly register when the projections 18 engage the recesses in the lugs 19 and the modification of Fig. 7 avoids this difliculty. In this construction, recesses 27 are provided in the face of the jaw 4; and into these recesses lit the rounded heads of the rivets 28 carried by the lugs 19 when the jaw 4. is in its operative position. The holes in the lugs 19 for the rivets and the recesses 27 can be drilled after the parts are adjusted to their proper positions so that the position of the jaw 4: can always be accurately fixed when the device is assembled. It will be seen that the rounded heads of the rivets carried by the one part and the recesses 27 carried by the other part take the place of the projections 18 and grooves in the lugs 19 of the other form of catch as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following:
1. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides in fixed relation to each other, a movable jaw mounted on one side of the frame, means for operating the jaw, a jaw mounted on the other side of the frame, and means whereby such last jaw may be adjusted toward and from the side on which it is mounted and toward and from the other aw and held fixedly in any desired position of adjustment whereby a compensation is provided for wear in the means for operating the said movable jaw.
2. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides, a movable jaw mounted on one side of the frame, means for operating the jaw, a pin screw-threaded into the other side of the frame, and a jaw swiveled on the end of the pin in opposition to the movable jaw.
3. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides, a movable jaw mounted on one side of the frame, means for operating the jaw, a pin screw-threaded into the other side of the frame, a second jaw swiveled on the end of the pin in opposition to the movable jaw, and means for fixing said second jaw against rotation.
4. I11 combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides, a movable jaw mounted on one side of the frame, means for operating the jaw, a pin screw-threaded into the other side of the frame, a second jaw swiveled on the end of the pin in opposition to the movable jaw, and arms on the second jaw for holding it against rotation upon the bench with which the clamp is used.
5. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides, a movable jaw mounted on one side of the frame, means for operating the jaw, a pin screw-threaded into the other side of the frame, a lock nut for the pin, and a jaw swiveled on the pin in opposition to the movable aw.
6. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides, a movable jaw mounted on one side of the frame, means for operating the jaw, a pin screw-threaded through the other side of the frame, a lock nut on the outer end of the pin, and a jaw pivotally mounted on the inner end of the pin.
7. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides, a movable jaw mounted on one side of the frame, means for operating the jaw, a second jaw opposing the movable jaw, and a pin connection be tween the other side of the frame and the second jaw and having an adjustable connection with one of such parts and a pivotal connection with the other part.
8. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides, a movable jaw mounted on one side of the frame, means for operating the jaw, a second jaw opposing the movable jaw, and a pin connection between the other side of the frame and the second jaw and having a screw thread connection with one of such parts and a pivotal connection with the other part.
9. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides, a jaw pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on one of the sides, means for maintaining the jaw in fixed position, a movable jaw pivot-ally mounted intermediate its ends on the other side, means for moving the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw, and means for yieldingly maintaining the movable jaw against rotation in its operative position in parallelism with the other jaw.
10. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides, a jaw pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on one of the sides, means for maintaining the jaw in fixed position, a movable jaw pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the other side, means for moving the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw, and a yielding catch for holding the movable jaw in its operative position against pivotal movement.
11. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame having a pair of opposing sides, a jaw pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on one of the sides, means for maintaining the jaw in fixed position, a movable jaw pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the other side, means for moving the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw, and spring means for holding the movable jaw against the side in which it is mounted, the said movable jaw and the portion of the side contacting therewith having an inter-engaging projection and recess adapted to register when the jaw is swung to operative position whereby the jaw is yieldingly held in such operative position.
12. In combination in a saw clamp, a supporting arm, a jaw pivoted intermediate its ends to the arm and yieldingly held in engagement therewith, and an inter-engaging projection and recess on the engaging portions of the arm and jaw adapted to register when the jaw is swung to operative position.
13. In combination in a saw clamp, a supporting arm, a jaw pivoted intermediate its ends to the arm, and interlocking means between the arm and jaw whereby the jaw is yieldingly held in operative position.
14. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame, a fixed jaw thereon, an opposing jaw, a support therefor pivotally connected at one end to the frame and provided intermediate its ends with an angular slot, an operating lever provided with a cam member engaging the wall of the angular slot, and a pivot pin for the lever mounted in the frame and lying in the said angular slot.
15. In combination in a saw clamp, a frame, a fixed jaw thereon, an opposing aw, a support therefor pivotally connected at one end to the frame and provided intermediate its ends wit-h an L-shaped slot, an operating lever provided with a cam member lying in the said slot, and a pivot pin for the lever mounted in the frame and lying in the said slot.
