PATENT @FFTQE PETER J. FAGOI, OF BENSON, ILLINOIS.
REMOVABLE TONGUE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 5,1913.
Application filed January 21, 1313. Serial No. 743,365.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER J. Facor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benson, in the county of VVoodford and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Removable Tongues, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vehicle tongues or draft attachments which may be used on any well known portable structures and it has for its object the provision of a socket member carried by the tongue hounds and adapted to receive the tongue in such manner that the latter may be quickly and conenient-ly removed from the vehicle so that the latter may be stored in a comparatively small space.
A Still the provision of means for holding the tongue against casual derangement from the socket member when the vehicle is in use.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of the tongue hounds of a vehicle, showing the application of the tongue thereto; Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the wedge receiving plate of the tongue; and Fig. 4 is a section on line H of Fig. 1.
The front hounds 1 herein shown include a metallic socket 2, which is tapered or relatively restricted toward its rear closed end 3, said socket being preferably of rectangular configuration, as shown in Fig. 4. The tongue 4: is provided with an inner end of a configuration conforming substantially with that. of the socket 2, whereby the walls of the latter may be brought into frictional contact with the walls of the former, so as to hold the tongue in a relatively tight condition.
To the rear end of the tongue is secured by means of fastening screws 5, a plate 6, on which is formed an integral, tapered lug 7 having a vertical rectangular slot 8 therein. This lug is adapted to be projected through an opening 9 in the head or closed end 3 of the socket 2. The slot 9 conforms in configuration with the lugs 7, and as illustrated said slot is of a restricted diameter rearwardly whereby when the tongue is further object of the invention is I moved in a longitudinal direction in the socket the flat surface of the lug will be brought into proper contact with the adjacent surface of walls of the opening 9. A wedge key 10 is driven into the slot 8 of the tongue plate and is adapted to be frictionally engaged with the rear wall of the slot 8 and the adjacent surface of the head or end 8 of the socket, so that the tongue may be moved into an operative locked position in the socket when the key is driven in a downward direction. A set screw 11 is adjustable in the rear end of the lug 7 and is adapted to be projected partly into the vertical slot 8 where it will efiectually engage against the wedge key 10 to hold the latter against casual displacement.
The construction of the device as described is such that the set screw 11 may be adjusted so as to disengage from the wedge key to permit the latter to be driven in an upward direction and entirely disengaged from the lug 7, so as to permit the tongue 4 to be withdrawn from its socket. In this manner it will be apparent that the vehicle when disconnected from its tongue may be stored in a comparatively small space.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as claimed.
I claim is 2- The combination with the tongue hounds of a vehicle including an integral tongue receiving socket of rectangular configuration in transverse section and of a restricted diameter toward its inner end and a head closing the inner end of the socket and provided with a centrally-located relatively restricted rectangular passage disposed axially of the socket, of a tongue having a portion corresponding substantially with the interior formation of the socket and slidably fitted therein, a member of U-form secured to the extreme inner end of the tongue and provided with surfaces lying flush therewith and contacting with adjacent Having thus described my invention, what alls of the socket, said member having an lugior engaging the key to hold the. same 10 lntegral lug extending through the passage against sllding movements.
in the head of the socket and lying there- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature beyond and pcilrovideol Withba vertical Wedge in presence of tWo Witnesses.
