SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,600, dated October 31, 1882.
Application filed March 16, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR O. BLAYNEY, of Chicago, in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Door-Bolts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for looking a bolt in its thrown position, with the object of preventing said bolt from being retracted through or from the opposite side of the door by means commonly known to burglars for this purpose; and it consists in the combination, with the bolt, barrel, and barrel-plate, of a spring arranged substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.

A is the barrel-plate ofadoor-bolt. B is the barrel. 0 is the bolt proper, and D is a spring provided with an ofiset, D, having an aperture, d, of suitable size to admit the bolt, and arranged in position to rise at the rear end of the bolt, and behind it, when thelatteris thrown forward. Said spring is here shown as being arranged externally to the plate A, and as being provided with a stud or offset, d, which drops into or through the aperture (0 in the bed-plate. It also has a thumb-piece, D by which the spring may be conveniently depressed. The barrel B is provided with the usual slot, B, and ofi'sets b b to receive the hank of the knob O on the bolt (J. When the bolt is thrust forward the spring rises into the position shown in Fig. 1, and serves as a stop to prevent the retraction of the bolt. offset D is brought opposite the end of the bolt 0, and permits the latter to pass backward through said aperture 61. The stud D is calculated to re-enforce the spring D as a stop to the retraction of the bolt by its engagement with the plate in case excessive force is applied to draw the bolt 0. The spring D may be attached to the foot of the stud, and arranged on the under side of the plate A, if preferred, as shown, but not by itself claimed, in another patent to me, application for which was filed of even date with that for the present patent.
A spring-actuated pivoted pawl, disengaged by a separate push-pin located in the bolt-knob, has been heretofore arranged to engage the bolt at its rear end. This is not myinvention, which contemplates the spring D, adapted to directly receive the pressure of the thumb in the manner described, thereby greatly simplifying the construction and making the operation thereof more readily apparent and more reliable.
I claim as my inventionl. In combination with the plate A, barrel B, and bolt 0, a spring, D, longitudinal with and attached to the plate A, and arranged to rise at the rear of the bolt when the latter is thrown and exposed to direct pressure of the thumb or linger for its disengagement with the bolt, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the plate A, having aperture a, barrel B, and bolt 0, the spring D, provided with the stud d, entering the aperture a, substantially as and for the purpose stated.
