QQI IN A. KEMMLER, OF PHILADELPHIA. PENNSYLVANIA. ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OTTO KLOPFER, OF PHILADELPHIA. PENNSYLVANIA.
BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 151 3.
Original application filed October 8. 19 10, Serial No. 585.986. Divided and this application filed December 6, 1911. Serial No. 664.228.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that t. Jons i l-).\l.\lI.F.lt. a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia. Peunsylvmiia. have invented certain improvements in Bedsteads. (the same being a division of my application. Serial No. 585.986. tiled October 1910i of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a bed bottom es pecially'adapted for use in connection with invalid beds and so designed as to provide an elastic support for all portions of the mattress resting upon it. to permit ready lateral movement of the mattress onto or from it. and to provide for the ready lifting of eith r end of the mattress independent of the other.
in the accompanying dra\ving--Figure l s a perspective view of a bed bottom convstructcd in accordance with my inventirn: Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on theline re a. Fig. 2.
The base frame of the bed bottom consists of longitudinal side bars I3 which are connected by transverse bars H. said longitudinal bars having lugs 15 upon which normalty rest the side bars 16 of the mattress supporting frame. said side bars 16 being connected by transverse bars 17. The mattress frame is divided into head and footsections. the side bars of each. section being pivoted to upwardly projecting lugs 19 on the side bars 13 of the base frame, as shown in Fig. i. so that either head or foot section can have an upward inclination imparted to it when it is desired to raise either the head or the feet, or both. of the occupant of the bed. Such raising movement is elt'ected by arms '30 and shafts 21. as shown in Fig. 2. the arms acting on the under sides of the side bars H; of the mattress carr \'iug frame. as shown in Fig. 3. and the shafts being adapted to hearings in the lugs 17 on the bars 13. one end of each shaft being coir structed for the reception of a suitable crank whereby it may be turned so as to raise or lower the arms 20. Each shaft is provided with a ratchet wheel 22. with which engages a pawl 21 to prevent the. descent of the arms 20 after they have been raised, the pawl being released from engagement with the ratchet wheel when it is desired to lower the arms. Other means of operating the arms 90 may. however. be adopted without departing from my invention.
The mattress supporting structure of the bed bottom consists of a number of endle s belts or bands 25 of rubber. spring steel. or other elastic material. these endless beits or hands passing around shafts 26. one at each side of the mattress carrying frame and these shafts being free to turn in brackets 27- on the side frames 16. .\n elastic support is thus provided for every part of the mattress and the latter is free to yield to pressure at any point without corresponding depression of any other portion of the mattress. 'lhe mattress can also be readily applied to or removed from the bed bottom by slipping it sidewise onto or from the same. the endless belts or hands J moving with the mattress and causing rotation of the shafts 26. By this means the mattre s with the patient upon it can be readily applied to or removed from the bed and the patient can be transferred from place to place while lying upon the mattress and with the mininnun of disturbance.
I claim:
1. The combination. in a bed bottom. of a mattress support consisting of a frame having shafts at opposite sides. and a plurality of narrow. endless. elastic bands passing around said shafts and also free to move around the same. i
2. The combination, in a bed bottom. of a base frame. a two-part mattress carrying frame pivotally mounted on said bane frame and each part carrying opposite side shafts. and a plurality of narrow. endless. elastic bands passing around said shafts. arms upon which the free ends of the mattress carrying frames rest, and transverse shafts whereby said arms may be indepentlcntly operated.
In testimony whereof. I have s gned my name to this specification. in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
