UNITED STATES PATENT EEIOE.
HENRY A. scoTT, 0F WINCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,491, dated April 9, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Invalid Bedstead, invented by HENRY A. SCOTT, of Winchester, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire.
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved invalid bed, the line stead, whose movable frame is raised and lowered by means of arms projecting from geared cams, to thereby insure eveii and convenient motion. The pivoted head-rest is supported by a spring ratchet, which permits rapid adjustment.
A, in the drawing, represents the bedstead frame. B is the vertically-adjustable frame,
which constitutes the direct support of the patient. This frame B, which has canvas, woven-wire, or other material stretched over it, rests with its ends on the arms a a, that of the arms a are, by this arrangement, always held level, and the frame B consequently adjusted gently and with ease. The upper ends of the arms a a are, by preference, provided with friction-rollers, as shown. A pawl and ratchet, h, on the outer end of the shaft D, serves to lock the same in a suitable position, and with it the frame B. The frame B is provided with a pivoted head-rest, E, which can be swung up more or less, and is held in position by a pair of notched arched plates or ratchets, d, which are, b springs e, crowded against pins f at the sides of the frame B. By
means of a string, g, which connects with the "lower ends of the ratchets d, and extends to the top of the head-rest, the patient is enabled to adjust the head-rest higher or lower, without other aid, the springs causing the ratchets to look as soon as the string is released. There is one ratchet, d, and connections at each side of the head-rest. The foot-rest may also constitute a pivoted frame, F, and be held at suitable elevation by a spring, cord, or other means. G is a box, large enough to receive a pot, and provided with a perforated top. A cushioned cover may be put upon it, whenever the patient desires to sit up, without being removed from the frame B.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The geared cams O O, carrying the arms a a, and arranged on a bedstead to constitute supports for the adjustable frame B, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The pivoted head-rest E, provided with the spring-ratchets d, and combined with the pins f and string 9, substantially as herein shown and described.
