UNITED STATES PATENT ALFRED P. JACOB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PENCIL.
-Application led October 10, 1912. Serial No. 725,035.
To all whom t may concern Be it known .that I, ALFRED P. JACOB, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Bronx, in the city and State oil New York, have invented a new and useiul improvement in Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in that type of pencil in which the rod of marking material is re movably held within the pencil holder.
My invention comprises more particularly a compressible sleeve surrounding the rod of marking material, to which Sleeve direct lateral pressure is applied for the purpose ot gripping and holding said rod.
A. practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure i is a view in side elevation of a portion oli a pencil embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, Fig. 3 is a similar section with the tip removed, and Fig. It is a cross section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 2.
The rod of marking material is denoted by l, and the tubular holder is denoted by Q. ik hollow stem has its enlarged portion 3, secured within the tubular holder 2, which stem has a reduced exteriorly screw-threaded portion 4t, a seat portion and `a pronged extension. l have shown this pronged eX- tensi'on as comprising four prongs having thin Shanks 5 and eXteriorly tapered heads 6. The stem 3 is provided with a seat 7 leading rearwardly from the pronged eX- tension. A sleeve 8, of compressible material, Ipreferably elastic material, such, for example, as rubber or cork. surrounds the rod l of marking material within the pronged extension ot' the hollow stem 3. This compressible sleeve 8 is held against unintentional removal by forcing its back end into the seat 'l'.
The tip 9 is provided with a screw-threaded portion l0, at its back end arranged to engage the screw-threaded portion e of the stem 3, for removably securing the tip to the pencil holder. This tip is furthermore,
provided with a tapered portion 11 arranged to engage the tapered heads 6 of the pronged extension ot the stem 3, for forcing the said heads inwardly as the tip is screwed Specification of Letters Patent. i p

rearwardly for compressing the sleeve S laterally to cause it to grip and hold the rod l of marking material firmly within the holder.
By forming the prongs with enlarged heads and reduced shanks and forming the prongs normally spread outwardly, I am enabled to procure an extended lateral pres- ,sure on the sleeve 8, and thereby an extended gripping engagement of the sleeve along the rod of marking material. The reduced bore 12 in the stem 3, is made slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the rod of marking material, and the front opening in the removable tip 9 is made slightly reater in diameter than the diameter of t e said rod, so that a slight lateral yielding of the rod may be obtained when the pencil is in use to eliminate as far as possible, the tendency to break the rod by an oblique pressure on its point.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence l do not wish to limit myself strictly to thel structure herein described, but
W'hat I claim is:
15A pencil including a rod of marking material, a compressible sleeve surrounding said rod and laterally movable means sur rounding said sleeve and arranged to exert direct lateral pressure thereon for causing it to grip and hold the rod.
2. A pencil including a rod of marking material, a compressible-sleeve surrounding said rod and laterally movable means surrounding said sleeve and arranged to exert extended direct lateral pressure thereon for causing it to grip and hold the rod.
3. A pencil including a rod of marking material, a hollow stem having a pronged extension, a compressible sleeve surrounding said rod withinsaid pronged extension and means for exerting lateral pressure on said pronged extension for causing the sleeve to be compressed laterally to grip and hold the rod.
4. A pencil including a rod or marking material, a hollow stem having a pronged extension, a compressible sleeve surrounding said rod within said pronged extension, and means for exerting extended lateral pressure on said pronged extension to cause it to exert extended lateral pressure on said sleeve for causing the sleeve to grip and hold the rod.
5. A pencil including a rod 0f marking material, a hollow stem having a pronged extension and a seat extended rearwardly therefrom, a oompressible sleeve surrounding said rod and located within said seat and said pronged extension, and means for exerting lateral pressure on said pronged extension for causing the sleeve to grip and hold said rod.
6. A pencil includin a rod of marking material, a tubular ho der, a hollow stem therein having a pronged extension', a compressible sleeve surrounding said rod within said pronged extension and a tubular tip engaging sald pronged extension and having a screw-threaded engagement with said stem for forcing said pronged extension inwardly to compress the sleeve laterally for causing itv to grip and-hold the rod.
7. A pencil including a rod of marking material, a tubular holder, a hollow stem therein having a pronged extension and a seat extended rearwardly therefrom, a compressible sleeve surrounding said rod and located within said seat and said pronged extension and a tubular tip engaging said pronged extension and having a screwthreaded engagement with said stem for forcing sald pronged extension inwardly to compress the sleeve laterally for causing it to grip and hold said rod! 8. A pencil including a rod of marking material, a hollow stem having a pronged extension, said prongs having tapered heads and reduced Shanks, a compressible sleeve surrounding said rod within said pronged extension and a tubulartip having a tapered portion engaging said tapered heads of the prongs and having a screw-threaded engagement with said stem for forcing said rongs inwardly to compress the sleeve latera ly for causing it to grip and hold the said rod.
9. A pencil including a rod of marking material, a tubular holder, a hollow stem having an enlarged portion secured within the holder, a reduced eXteriorly screwthreaded portion and a pronged extension, a compressible sleeve surrounding said rod within said pronged extension and a hollow tip engaging said pronged extension and said screw-threaded ortion for forcing the said pronged extension inwardly to compress the sleeve laterally for causing it to grip and hold said rod.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this ninth day of October 1912.
