To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE B. S'rnnrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mailing-Packages, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a ,part of this specification.

This invention relates to mailing packages, and has for its object a package adapted to be cut from a single blank and which can be securely. fastened together without clasps or other metallic fastening means.

This invention consists of a blank scored to form a number of rectangular strips.

Four such strips are required in the form shown in Fig. 1, being indicated by the letters B, C, N, and J. At one end of these strips a flap A adjoins and is scored at its junction with the rectangular strip B.

This flap has at one side a lobe a, and at the other side a lobe a and between these two lobes at the end of the blank a lobe b. At the sides of the blank and at each end of the strip N, which is the third strip removed from the flap A, end "portions of the box adjoin in the blank. The end portion at oneside of the blank comprises the rectangular end-piece R having on opposite sides two stay pieces j and K and on the remaining side the locking-flap.

The end portion at the opposite side of the blank comprises the end-piece S, which is at one side integral with the rectangular strip N and has adjoining it on two opposite. sides the stay-pieces X and m, and,

adjoining it on the remaining side, the

locking-flap I. The rectangular strip J in the main portion of the blank, adjoining the strip N, has slots (Z and 0 cutat each end. These slots are intended for the reception of the lobes a and a and their position is calculated so that they will register with the lobes when the flap is folded down on the strip J. Between these slots a slit 6 is provided, in which the lobe b slips.

. At the end of the blank opposite from the flap A, and adjoining the rectangular strip J is a locking strip P, which in its general 79 at the other side of the strip is formed in as are also the lockingalike manner, pieces 8 and s in the strips H and I.

The above directed cuts having been made, and the above described strips having been marked off from their adjoining strips by scoring the blank at their junctions, the blank is complete and ready to be folded into box form. The end pieces are then raised as shown in Fig. 2 and the stays j and K folded in and into right-angular relation with the end-piece R and the stays -X and m are likewise folded in and into right-angular relation with the end-piece S. The rectangular strip J is then folded up against the stays K and mand the strip iP interlocked with the locking-flaps .H and :I by slipping the locking-piece s .of the flap H over the substance of the strip -P next adjoining the cut, and the tongue of the locking'portion 7) over the portion 72. of the flap H. .This forms a firm interlock and the locking-piece s and locking-portion p on the other side being likewise interlocked, the-strip P is firmly locked to the .ends R andS and parallel to the-strip N'which forms the. bottom of the box. These two engagements of the locking flaps I and H with the locking strip P form corner interlocks. Each corner interlock has, as constituent members, a locking flap and a portion of the locking strip P.

strip N the bottom, the end-pieces R and S the ends, the pieces 7', K, X and m form the stays, the strip P interlocking with the pieces H and I, and forming the top of the box, and the strip B folds over and covers the top, while the flap A interlocks with the strip J and closes the box.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 6-9 the strip B which serves to cover the top of the box is omitted, as is also the lobe b. The strip P is interlocked with the end pieces H and I by providing slits f and 7 in which the locking pieces 8 and 8 may be slipped in place of interlocking over the edge of the strip P, as in Fig. 3, and the lobes a and a of the flap A are slipped into slits u and u of the locking flaps H and I.

My corner interlock consists primarily of at least one tongue on one of the constituent members which is free at one side, but closely adjoins the substance of the member upon which it is carried on the other side, that is, the tongue is integral with the locking-flap or looking strip (depending upon which member carries it) at one of its ends, itis also free at one side because it is located at the corner of the blank, but at the opposite side it is closely adjacent the member which carries it for it is only separated therefrom by a slit. For the purpose of clearness of reference the portion of the member carrying the tongue that directly adjoins the tongue on the side and constitutes the remainder of the locking-piece will be designated the lap-piece, for its function is to lap over a portion of the other constituent member of the corner interlock. The tongue can be slipped through a slit such asshown at f or f in Fig. 8 or it may be slipped under the substance of the blank adjacent a similar tongue in the other constituent interlock (Figs. 1, 2, and 3). This latter form is my preferred form of construction, but it will readily be seen that almost equivalent results are accomplished by either form of the locking-portion. The essential thing in the interlock is the presence, in one constituent membera-of the interlock, of the tongue closely adjacent at one side to a lap-piece and the presence of a locking portion, such as either a slit or a similarly formed tongue, in the other con- 5 stituent member of the interlock. Either form of construction allows the tongue and the lap-piece to divide, one ortion lying on one side of the locking-portion of the other constituent member of the interlock, while the other portion lies on the opposite side of the locking-portion. I, therefore, wish it understood that when the locking-portion is referred to in the claims it covers both forms.

lVhat I claim is 1. A mailing package formed from an integral blank, comprising a bottom having portions projecting from the ends thereof adapted to form the end walls of the package, said portions being provided with locking flaps projecting therefrom each having a slit extending inwardly from one side thereof parallel to the outer edge thereof, said bottom being provided with a portion projecting from one side thereof adapted to form one side wall of the package, and having a locking strip extending therefrom provided with locking slits extending inwardly from the outer edge and parallel to the ends thereof adapted to interlock with the locking slits of the flaps of the end portions when the sides and end portions of the blank are folded, said bottom being also provided with a portion projecting from the other side thereof of a length when folded to form the other side wall of the box and to overlie the interlocked locking members pendicular to each other to form the bottom,

two sides, said locking strip and the cover of the package; end pieces, one adjoining each end of one of the interior strips and marked ofl from such strip by a scoring so as to be foldable perpendicular thereto; a locking flap adjoining each end-piece at its end and marked off therefrom by' a scoring so as to fold perpendicular to the end piece; the said locking flaps having each a out near one corner and the said locking strip having a out near each outside corner; the said two locking flaps and the said locking strip being capable of interlocking at their cut corners to form two corner'interlocks; the said cuts forming in one of the constituent members of each of said corner interlocks a locking-piece which comprises a tongue and a lap piece, and forming in the other constituent member a locking-portion to receive the locking-piecevand cut so that the tongue of the locking-piece may be caused to lie on one side of the locking-portion and the lappiece may be caused to lie on the other side of the locking portion; and means in conneetion with one of the said first mentioned strips that forms one of the sides of the package for securing the cover flap thereto, substantially as described.
