. greater width than the door, and the bed and door swinging independently on vertical hinges, either in vertical alinement with each other or as nearly so as practicable.
The object of the present invention is to provide means whereby, as desired, the bed may be swung outward with the door, or the door may be swung outward without. any corresponding movement of the bed. A
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a front view of a closet having a bed of the character described therein, the door being broken away in' part; Fig. 2 is a hori zo'ntal sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 bed, looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig 2-, showing a latching bar in its normal position in full lines and in other positions in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a closet wall, 2 the door thereof, hinged, as shown at 3, to the door casing 4t. Secured by screws 5Jto the floor (3 of the closet, imme diately behind the door and close to its hinged side, is an angle iron 7 having a vertical member 8, to which is secured one strap Lot a hinge, the other strap 0 being secured to the head frame'of a collapsible bed t1. Said door is provided with the usual latch 12. and upon thesquare shank 13 of said latch, between the door plate and the handle on the inner side of the door, is passed a latching bar 14 having at one end a square hole fitting snugly around said shank. Said bar is arranged in said shank so that it extends downward at an angle of about 45 away from the adjacent door casing. On turning the shank in one direction to withdraw the latch, said bar is turned upward through an angle of about 45 to an is an elevation of an edge of the approximately horizontal position. in mow ing into this position it passes into a notch cr recess '16 formed in the lower edge of a plate 17 secured to a side of the head frame of the bed nearest said handle. and when the bar is in this position, the bed will swing open with the door. But upon turning the shank of the latch in the other direction to withdraw the latch the bar moved still farther downward through an angle of about 45 to an approximately vertical position, the bed will not so swing open. with said door. Upon releasing the handle, the bar will drop out of engagement with said recess.
1. In combination with a do or having a latch and a handle for opcratin said latch, and a bed arranged on a vertical pivot in close roximity to the line about which the door swings, a device secured to said latch and arranged to be moved into engagement with a part of the bed when the latch is moved to open the door.
2. In combination with a door having a latch and a handle for operating said latch, and a bed arranged ,on a vertical pivot in close proximity to the line about which the door swings, a device secured 'to-said latch and arranged to be moved into engagement with a part of the bed when the latch is moved in one direction to open the door, .but not so moved into engagement when the latchis moved in the other direction to open the door.
In combination ith a swinging door, having a latch, and a ollapsible bed having a pivot in close proximity to the line about which the door swings, an operating shank connected with said latch, a bar connected to said shank on the same side of the door as the bed, and a plate secured to the bed saidbar is adaptedto be received when the shank is operated to withdraw the latch.
in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my band in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
CHARLES G. PELLE-Tlltll.
