Be it known that I, FELIX FRANCIS OoIEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silverbow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Veterinary Instruments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to veterinary surgical instruments and is'primarily directed to that type of instruments which are used for cutting the lampas or the swollen lining ofthe horses mouth.

Instruments of this class previously devised have been so constructed as to have the cutting blades projected through a shield. A disadvantage of this construction is that the blades are often projected too far, thereby causing painful and serious cuts in the horses mouth.

An object of the present invention is to provide a lancet or instrument of the class above set forth, the blade or blades of which may be adjusted or regulated to cut to eertain depths, depending upon the size of the lampas.

A further object of the present invention is to so construct the instrument whereby after use, the blades may be withdrawn within the casing for making the article safer in carrying around with a person or for ship-ment.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,

In carrying out the present invention, a body is provided comprising a shank or handle 1 and an enlarged portion or head 2, the latter being provided with a recess 3 arranged transversely with respect to the body. The head 2 is also provided with a.

plurality of slots 4 which communicate with the recess 3.

A blade holder or plate 5 is slidably mounted within the recess 3 and is p-rovided with a plurality of threaded openings to receive the threaded Shanks 6 carried by the blades 7 for detachably mounting the latter on said blade holder. The cutting blades 7, which are illustrated as six in number but which may be any number desired, are adapted to operate and project through the slots 4L and are provided with the rectangular shoulders 8 at the base of the blades. Thehead on the opposite sides of the recess 3 is provided with the recesses 9 which receive a cro-ss member o-r bearing plate 10, the latter being secured to the head by any suitable means, sueh as screws 11, to permit the removal of said plate 10. The plate 10 is provided with an opening in which is swiveled a threaded or screw member 12 which carries on one terminal a thumb or knurled wheel 13 and on the threaded terminal receives the blade holder 5 for projecting or withdrawing the blades 7 as said member 12 is rotated. l

The form of the blades 7 and the provision of the shoulder portions 8 are features of advantage of my instrument in that the blades, by passing through the slots il, are practically interlocked with the head 2. As the shoulder 8 of each blade is rectangular in form and of a length corresponding to the width of the recess 3, it will be apparent. that the abutting relation of the ends of the shoulder 8 of each blade with the walls of the recess 3 and the interlocking relation of the blades 7 with respect to the head prevent liability of any unscrewing movement of the Shanks 6 of the blades when the parts of the device have once been assembled. As the blades are frequently adjusted under act-ual conditions of use of the instrument, the desirability of preventing looseness or accidental displacement of the blades is obvious.

From the foregoing, it will be noted that upon rotating the threaded member 12 in one direction, the blades 7 will be projected to any desired point and upon reversing the movement of said member l2, said blades and plate holder will be withdrawn from a projected position entirely within the head 2. When the blades are entirely withdrawn the instrument may be safely carried within the pocket. When it is desired to remove the blade holder 5, the cro-ss member or plate 10 will be detached from the head 2 Whereuprlnn the removal of said plate is made possib e.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A veterinary instrument comprising a longitudinally grooved head, a blade holder plate movable Within the groove of the head, blades spaced apart and havin threaded connections with said blade ho der plate, the head being formed with slots through which said blades extend, means to shift the plate Within the groove aforesaid to Wholly Withdraw the blades from said slots into the groove, and means intermediate the blades and head to prevent accidental unscrevving of the blades from their holder plate When said blades are disengaged from the slots.

A veterinary instrument comprising a handle having at one end thereof a-transversely elongated head formed with a longitudinal recess and having a plurality of slots communicating With said recess, a blade holder mounted in said recess, a plurality of blades, each having a threaded shank screwed into the blade holder and being formed With an approximately rectangular head, the ends of which abut With the Walls of the recess aforesaid to prevent turning movement or looseness of the blade upon the holder, said blades projecting through the slots above mentioned, and a member carried by the head and connected with the blade holder for adjusting the same in the recess of the head.
