STEPHEN SHELLHAMMER, OF WOODLAND, CALIFORNIA.
FLOWER-HOLDING STICK-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHEN SIIELLI-IAM- MER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVoodland, in the county of Yolo and State of California, have invented a new and useful Flower-Holding Stick-Pin; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful stick pin, for holding bouquets and the like upon a persons wearing apparel.
As an object of the invention, it is the aim to provide an improved pin of this nature, adapted to be sold as a novelty at expositions, bazaars, fairs, resorts, and various social functions and the like.
One of the features of the invention is the provision of a stick pin of this nature terminating at its upper portion in a heart shaped member having spring jaws, adapted to clamp the stem of a bouquet, all. of such parts being constructed from a single length of spring steel wire.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a plate, the side edge portions of which are rolled about portions of the sides of the heart-shaped member, which plate may be provided with an engraving of a bouquet, and the name or title of the exposition or the like, or the place where the exposition is held.
There are disclosed in the drawings certain features of construction, but in prac tical fields these features may require alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved stick pin constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top edge view of the pin. Fig. 3 is a side edge view. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 1-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view of the stick pin showing the engraved plate omitted.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates a single length of wire which is shaped or constructed into a heart-shaped member 2. The side portions 3 of the member are formed into arched portions 4. The wire material beyond the arched portions 4 is formed into curved arms 5, which overlap one another as at 6. These arms 5 are formed into jaws 7 and 8, which are inclined toward one another, and are adapted to clamp the stem. of a bouquet. The inclining of the jaws 7 and 8 toward one another prevents the stem of the bouquet from falling outwardly, while the clamping action of the jaws prevents vertical displacement of the stem of the bouquet. The wire material beyond the jaw 7 terminates in a pin shank 9, which is adapted to pierce a persons wearing apparel, for instance, the lapel of the coat or the like. A plate 10 having an engraving 11 of a bouquet there on, has its side edge portions terminating in rolls 12, through which the side portions 3 of the heartshaped member are arranged. In this manner the plate is held securely to the heart-shaped member, and also constitutes means for reinforcing the side portions 8. This plate 10 is also designed to have engraved thereon the name of the eX- position, bazaar, or fair or the like, and in some instances the name of the place at which the bazaar or fair or the like is held. The arched portion 4 of the side portions 3 are designed to be engaged by the thumb and the forefinger, so that the jaws 7 and 8 may be pressed apart, in order to release the stem of the bouquet. In Fig. 5, however, the plate 10 is omit-ted.
From the foregoing it will be observed that there has been produced a simple and efficient stick pin, and one which. has been found desirable and practical, as an attractive noveltv to be sold at expositions. fairs, resorts and social functions or the like, for holding bouquets or other articles.
The plate 10 may be constructed of any suitable metal, such as brass with a nickel plating or silver or gold or the like. The jaws 7 and. 8 are provided with serrations to bite into the stem of the bouquet to we vent displacement. These serrations are designated by the character 8*. In Fig. 3 of the drawings it will be seen that the stem of the bouquet may engage the arch of the jaws 7 and 8 and the arches 41, so as to be held in place.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In combination, a single length of spring steel wire formed into a heart-shaped member, the side portions of the heart shaped member being constructed in arched portions, the wire material beyond said arched port-ions forming arms crossing one another and terminating in opposing arched jaws inclined toward one another, adapted to clamp the stem of a bouquet, said arched jaws liaving serrations; and one of said aWs terminating in a pin shank, the arched portions of the sides of the heart-shaped member constituting finger pieces whereby the jaws may be separated, and a plate adapted to contain an engraving having its side edge portions provided with rolls and conforming to the contour of a lower portion of the heartshaped member, said rolls adapted to receive the side portions of the heart-shaped member. s i
2. In combination, a single length of spring steel wire formed into a heart-shaped member, the side portions of the heart.- shaped member being constructed in arched portions, the wire material beyond said arched portions forming arms crossing one another and terminating in opposing arch jaws-inclined toward one another adapted to clamp the stem of a bouquet, and one of said jaws terminating in a pin shank, the arched portions of the sides of the heartshaped member constituting finger pieces whereby the jaws may be separated, and a plate adapted to contain an engraving having its side edge portions conforming to the contour of the lower portion of the heartshaped member and connected to the same, for the purpose of giving resiliency and protecting the apex of the heart-shaped memher. i y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
