Description
No. 823,704. PATENTED JUNE 19, 1906. 'J. SIMPSON. NAPKIN HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAB. 9, 1905.
amen km:
UNITED STATES. PATENT OFF ICE; JAMES SIMPSON, OF CROOKSTON, MINNESOTA.
NAPKlN-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it knownthat I, JAMES SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crookston, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Napkin-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which [0 it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for holding napkins upon persons while eating; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and
.15 arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, durable in use, very efficient for the purpose intended, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. 1
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is better. understood, are accomplished by the. construction illustrated in the accompanymg drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view'of the holder, showing one corner of a napkin clasped by the same. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device,
0 and Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 denotes my improved napkin-holder, which com rises an attaching-hook 2, laterally-extendlng napkin-engaging jaws 3, and a 3 5 curved portion 4, which connects said jaws and forms a finger-piece to permit them to be readily opened or separated to facilitate the application or removal of one corner of the napkin N. The device is preferably and as 0 shown formed from a single piece of resilient wire by bending the same upon itself at its center to form the bottom or end 5 of the attaching-hook 2, then curving or bending the same to give said hook the desired curvature,
as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, then bending the spaced ends of the piece downwardly to form the straight verticalportions 6 of the hook, thenbending said ends out wardly at right angles in opposite directions to form the inner portions 7 of the napkin-engag-. ing jaws 3, then bending said ends reversely to form the outer portions 8 of said jaws, and finally curving the extreme portions of said ends and soldering them or otherwise securing them together, as shown at 9, to form the outwardly-curved finger-piece 4. I
It will be seen that owing to the resiliency of the wire or metal of which the device is made the portions 7 and 8 of the jaws 3 will spring together, so as to firmly clamp the corner of the napkin, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The curved portion or fingerpiece 4, it will be seen, permits the portions 7 and 8 of said jaws to' be readily separated, so that the napkin may be applied to or removed from the device. In using the device or holder the attaching-hook 2 may be engaged with the collar of the user or with his vest or coat or other portion of his garment, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I The herein-described napkin-holder made of a single piece of resilient wire doubled to form a hookhaving a downwardly-directed bill, vertical spaced portions 6 at the inner end of the bill, lateral oppositely-extending jaws 3 having the inner side portions 7 bent outwardly from the lower ends of the portions 6 and extending at right angles to said portions 6 and the outer side portions 8 bent reversely with reference to and converging inwardly toward and coming in contact with the sides 7, and the outwardly-curved finger piece 4 connecting the ends of the outer side portions 8 of said jaws.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I JAMES SIMPSON Witnesses: l S L. CoLLINs,
OHosBY BERRY.
