To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HUGO TUEGKMANTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fingar-Shields, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains tor-make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part. of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved surgical appliance which is particularly adapted as a shield or guard for an injured finger. It very often ha pens before an injured finger is .entire y healed, it receives further injuries which frequently aggravates the injury and retards the healing. A device of. this class should be inexpensive, capable of firm and rapid adjustment to and detachment from the injured finger; it should permit the air to reach the covered finger, should permit movement of said finger and serve as an ef- 'fective guard to protect said finger from contacting with objects, thereby preventing further injury to the same. a

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangements of the parts hereinafter described, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions and size and minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the a vantages of this invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a hand, upon the fore-fin ger of which is'seen a shield or guard in accordance with my invention held and secured in place thereon by the tapes attached thereto. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the device showing it in open position. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view taken on lines w-w in Fig. '2, looking in the direction in dicated by the arrow; and Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section of the device, illustrating the position of the finger therein,

Similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings. 7 The finger shield or guard of my invent1on comprises two approximately troughshaped sections a and b, which may be hinged together as indicated at o. A plurality of apertures d are punched through the sections a and b, preferably near the hingedends to provide the proper ventilation for the finger. In its preferred form, my invention is fashioned from paste-board covered with gauze, but any light sheet metal, wire gauze or other suitable material may be used.

The two sections a and b may be secured together in any suitable or improved manner, as for example, by means of the tapes e, 6, one of which is secured to each section and adapted to be passedaround and secured to the other section. In the preferred form of my invention, I mold the sections a and b from ordinary thick pasteboard and cover the same with linen or gauze f, so that the linen at the front ends of the sections forms the hinge c therefor. It will also be noted that the sections a and b are wider at their hinged ends than at the other ends for the reason that the shield is designed to be secured to the finger by the narrow portion of the shield as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 4 of .the drawings, so as to be firmly held by the said narrow portion, thereby preventing the shield from slipping back and contacting with the finger, as would be the case if the shield were of uniform dimensions and secured to any other part of the hand or wrist.

The invention is not limited to the exact embodiment shown, but may be modified in various ways in the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. A finger shield comprising two covered trough-shaped sections hinged together, said sections'being wider at the hinged end than at the opposite end, the covering of saidsections formin the hinge therefor and means secured to t e narrow ends of the sections for attaching the shield to the finger.
