TRUNKFASTENING AND LASHING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 26, 1911.
atented J lll y 8, 1913. SerialNo. 646,297.
To ZZ wim/m, 'it may concern.'
Be it known that we, @HARLEY Fos'rnn and JOHN Raison, citizens of the United States, residing at Southwest City, in the county of McDonald and State of Missouri, have invented a new andi useful Trunk Fastening' and liashing Device; and we do hereby (leclare thefollowingzto loe a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in-the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful trunk fastening or lashing device.
rIhe object of the invention is to provide a device of this .nature for tying trunks, suitcases, boxes, packages, or any kind of commodity, which device comprises a number of suitable straps of any suitable 1naterial, extending about the commodity transversely and lengthwise thereof, the ends of two of the straps having hook and eye connections, while the ends of the other two straps are provided with a clasp locking device, which, as it is closed, tightens the straps.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View of the fastening or tying device, showing the commodity in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the clasp fastening device detached, showing the parts thereof in locked positions. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the parts in unlocked positions. Fig. 1 is a detail view of the hook 11 and the ring 9, showing the straps 7 and S.
Referring to the drawings, 1, 2, 3 and 4t designate straps, which are connected to the rings 5 and Connected also to the rings 5 are the straps 7 and 8. The end of the strap 8, which is arranged on top oit the commodity, connects to a ring 9, while the looped end 10 of the strap 7 is provided with a hook 11, designed to connect to the ring 9. The strap 7 is provided with a buckle 12, whereby the same may be shortened or lengthened, in order that the strap 7 may be passed about the eomn'lodities of different sizes.
Connected to the rings G are the straps 125 and 14. The strap 13 is provided with a buckle 15, and so arranged as to permit 'the strap 13 to loe lengthened or shortened,
so as to it commodities of dillerent lengths. The .looped end of tl strapfll is provided with la link lll terminating ina hook 17. This hook 17 engages `a link 18, which is pivoted in the eyes of the clasp lever 19. The eyes ofthe clasp lever are denoted by the characters 20. The clasp lever con1- prises the side portions 21 and 2Q, the free ends of which are turned into loops 23. These loops 23 fulcrmn on the commodity, as the clasp lever being' closed. When the clasp lever is closed, the loops 9.3 hold the same closed until a locking device is locked. The portions 24 beyond the loops terminate in hooks 25, which engage the eyes 26 of the wire U-shaped member 27. This wire U- shaped member is carried by one end of the strap 141, as shown. The free end of the clasp member 19 is provided with a tab 2S, whereby the same may be swung open. Also carried by the free end of the clasp lever 19 is a spring locking device QSH The laterally extending portions 29 of the spring locking device engage the side portions of the U-shaped member, in order to hold the clasp lever 19 in a locked position with relation to the U-shaped member, as shown in Fig. 2. To secure the spring locking device to the clasp lever, the same is coiled about the clasp lever.
In tying a commodity, the straps are arranged as shown in Fig. 1 and the hook 11 is connected to the ring 9. Subsequently, the hook 1.7 of the link 1G is connected to the link 1S, after which the clasp .lever is thrown in a closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus drawing the straps 13 and 1-1 taut, about the length of the commodity. rIhe clasp lever A1.9 is finally locked with relation to the U-shaped wire member, by throwing the laterally extending ends of the spring locking device under the side portions oit' the wire U-shaped member.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination, a pair of straps, a U- shaped member havingl an oll'set portion extending downwardly at one end to which one end of one of the straps is connected and provided with eyes at the other end, a clasp lever constructed of a single piece of wire bent in U-shapml form, the free end portions of which terminate in ol'lset hooks connecting the eyes of the first U-shaped member, the clasp lever having eyes intermediate its ends, a link pivoted in the eyes of the clasp lever, a link connected by one end of the other strap and terminating in a hook to enga-ge the link of the clasp lever, a U-shaped spring locking device the intermediate portion or arch of which is formed in coils Wound about the arch of the clasp lever, thereby pivoting` the locking device to the free end of said lever, the locking` device having its spring arms terminating in laterally extending portions to engage the side portions of the iirst U- shaped member When the lever is closed, the said lever having loops adjoining the hooks adapted to bear against a commodity and so arranged With respect to the hooks, that the straps may be drawn tight as the lever is closed, the 'spring locking device adapted to engage in the oii'set portion of the first U-shaped member to permit the laterally extending portions to engage said side portions.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
