Application filed August 1i?,` 1912. Serial No. 714,568.
To all whom t 'Hwy concern Be it known thatI I, Geenen M. ,ToirNsosg a" citizen o-;t` the United States ot America, residing at rlishop, in the county of llfash ington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Miners Emergency-Cases, oit' which the toll owing is a specitication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.
This invention relates to a miner-s emergency case, and the primary object ol' my invention is to provide a novel container for an auxiliary torch, fuses, wicks, illuminating it'uel and such necessities as are required by miners for maintaining a lamp in operation and -for performing certain duties.
Another object of this invention is to provide a container for an illuminating grease, said container having provision whereby a quantity ot the grease can be easily obtained.
A further object of thisl invent-ion is to provide a miners emergency case that is simple in construction, durable and highly etlieient 'for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in a .novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter speciticall y described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing wherein like mnnerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in which Figure l is a front elevation ot the case, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation ot the same, Fig. 3 .is a plan ot the case, Fig. 4l is a horizontal sectional View of the same, Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view ot the case in a closed position, Fig. G is a similar view oit the same in an open position, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a detached releasing mechanism1 Fig. 8 is a iierspeetivc View ot a detached elevating cap, and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a portion ot' a holder.
A case in accordance with this invention comprises a shell having two spaced-apart substantially cylindrical compartments l. and 2 communicating through the medium ot the central compartment 3.
Located within the compartment 2 is a cylindrical holder l having the inner end thereof closed and having a longitudinal slot, 5 extending approximately the entire length of the holder. Slider-bly ar 'tinged within the holder t a 'feeding cap (3 provided with a `proiectitm 7 thaty extends into the slot rlhe 'feeding cap t3 is a rrangcd upon the upper convolution ot a coiled compression spring 8, said spring and said cap constituting a feeding device tor a stick of illuminating grease t) placed in the holder 4t. The illuminating grease is ot the ordinary and well known type known commercially as Sunshine illuminating lnel.
Arranged longitudinally oit the holder t at the slotted side thereof is a releasing mechanism, comprising a plate l0 having equally spaced teeth ll extending into the slot 5 in the path ot the projection 7. Said teeth limiting the upward movement of the `feeding cap (3. The plate l() is provided with parallel apertured .lugs l2 and pivotally mounted between said lugs by a pin Il is the lower end ot a lever 1l thatkg is pivotally mounted upon apinl arranged transversely oi' the compartment $5. The upper end oit' the lever 14 is curved and held in engagement with a toothed wheel 1G revolubly mounted upon a transverse pin 17 detachably suplmrted transversely `ot the conu'mrtment l. lhe lever Ill; held normally in engagement with the toothed wheel ltt by a lat. compression spring t8 arranged between the apertured lugs l2, one end of said spring bearing against the lever lll and the opposite end thereo't against a cylindrical auxiliary holder 19 arranged in the compartment l. '.lhe spring 1S bears against the plate 10 and holds said plate normally in engagement with the holder b/twhereby the teeth ll extend into the slot 5 of said holder. The auxiliary holder 19 is employed tor holding a stick of grease 2O similar to the stick 9. Easy access is had to the stick Q() through the medium of a detachable bottom plate Q1 that is slidably n'iounted between inwardly projecting flanges Q2 carried by the lower edges of side plates 23 and Q--t carried by the outer sides oi' the case shell. The side plate 23 is in the form of a door that has a spring hinge Q5 supporting the door whereby it. can be opened. The door Q3 is retained in a closed position by a conventioiml torm of spring pressed latch 2V. The door forms a coimnirtment 27 adapted to contain an auxiliary torch 28 or other miners device. The side plate 2st is soldered or otherwise connected to the outer side ot the shell to :torm a compartment 2S having the upper end thereof open whereby fuses or wicks can be carried in the compartment. Adjacent to the plate 24 are oblong staples 29 to receive a belt (not shown) whereby the case can be carried upon the body.
The top of the case has a top plate- 30 provided with openings 31 and 32 and slots 33. The opening 32 provides clearance for the upper end of the holder 4 and the opening 31 provides clearance for the toothed wheel 16. Slidably mounted upon the top plate 30 is a lid 34 that has one end thereof 'beveled to provide a knife blade or cutter 35 adapted to out pieces of grease from the stick 9. The lid 34 is slidably held by depending guides 36 that extend through the slots 33 of the top plate. Riveted or otherwise connect-ed to the top of the lid 34 are the lateral flanges 37 of a casing 38. The easing is in communication with the opening 31 through the medium of an opening 39 in the lid 34 and extending through the openings 39 and 31 is a curved resilient member 40 that engages the toothed wh-eel 16, for maintaining the latter from movement with respect to the free end of the lever 14. The member 40 is maintained in a depending position by the bracket 40a. Extending into the end of the casing 33 isa leaf spring' 41 carried by a holder 42 secured to the side of the shell. The leaf spring 41 has a tendency to open the lid 34 and to retain said lid in an open position. A conventional fo-rm of spring pressed latch 42LL is carried by the shell to engage av shoulder 43 of the lid 34. When the latch 42"L is released the spring 41 immediately opens the lid 34 and the opening movement of the lid imparts movement to the toothed wheel 16 by reason of one of the teeth being engaged by the end wall of the opening 39, the tooth of said wheel. extending into the opening as shown in Fig. 5. As the toothed wheel is moved, the lever 14 is rocked and the toothed plate 10 is moved sutliciently to release the spring pressed feeding cap 6, but the lever in riding over one of the te-eth y of the wheel 16 is suddenly released and the toothed plate allowed to assume its normal position. It is during the movement of the toothed plat-e 10 that the feeding cap 6 is elevated to be engaged by another tooth, whereby the feeding cap will have a step or intermittent movement for feeding the stick of grease 9 out of the open end of the holder 4. Vhen the lid 34 is closed the projected end of the stick of grease will be cut thereby permitting of a quantity of the grease being obtained and placed in a lamp. As the lid 34 is restored to its normal position the member 40 engages the toothed wheel 16 and positions said wheel as shown in F ig. 5.
The emergency case can be made of strong and durable metal and used to advantage by miners and subterranean laborers.
