BATH APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1913.
Application filed March 23, 1912. Serial No. 685,897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES FRANKLIN KING, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim of this specification, its object being to provide simple, economical and portable sanitary bathing apparatus designed to inclose the person of a bather and with which aeriform, liquid or aerated liquid baths, medicated or otherwise may be admin istered by the bather personally or by an attendant, said apparatus being for home, hospital, sanatorium and travelers use, and serving where the ordinary bath conveniences are not available.
Figure l of the drawings represents a front elevation of bathing apparatus in accordance with my invention partly broken away and enveloping the person of a bather; Fig. 2, a sectional view of a detail of the apparatus illustrating how the same is closed airtight on the bather; Fig. 3, an elevation of a pad-collar constituting part of said apparatus, and Fig. 4, a perspective view of the open upper end of a bag constituting another part of the apparatus.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 5 indicates a bag made from any suitable flexible waterproof material and provided at its upper end with a casing 6 for a drawstring 'I', the ends of the drawstring being within the bag. Designed to be partially inclosed by the bag, at the upper end of the same, is a pad-collar 8 for the neck ofthe bather, and by means of the drawstring, said end of the bag is gathered or shirred airtight on the collar without discomfort to said bather. V001 has been found preferable as a stufling because of its adaptability to conform to the person of the wearer with reference to obtaining an air-tight fit of the bag upon the bather, and because of its comfort, for the collar, but any suitable material may be employed, and said collar may be separable from the bag, as herein shown, or attached thereto as found most convenient or desirable in practice.
The front of the bag, adjacent to its upper end, is provided with an inflating attachment of any suitable construction, the one shown being a plate 9 having an outwardly extending check-valve nozzle 10 the plate being secured upon the inside of said bag by a backing strip 11 attached thereto or otherwise as may be found desirable.
The bather being in the bag, the collar is positioned and the drawstring operated to close said bag airtight on said collar, after which air, steam or other aeriform fluid may be injected into said bag by an attendant, said fluid being medicated if desired. Or previous to enveloping the bather, as above specified, the bag may be partially filled with water or other liquid with which to bathe. as shown at 12 in Fig. 1, and if desirable the bather may inflate said bag by blowing therein through the aforesaid nozzle. To thus inflate the bag, a portion of the same is lifted by the bather from within to bring the nozzle to his mouth. By alternate crouching and rising in the bag or by rolling with the same upon a bed or floor on the part of the bather, or by manipulations of an attendant, the liquid in said bag, aerated or otherwise may be made to surge in simulation of sea waves and thus afford gratification to said bather. By employing hot water and compressed air in the bag, the actions of the bather or the manipulation of an attendant, as aforesaid, will produce an accumulation of steam and gas in said bag and thus enhance the pleasure of the bath.
Soap, and other toilet conveniences may be taken into the bag for the use of the bather, and after a bath said bag may be readily drained of its liquid contents and thoroughly cleaned.
The length of the collar 8 may be such as to permit of the same serving as a waistband when it is only desirable to bathe below the waist in which case the drawstring is manipulated from outside the bag.
I claim:
A bath apparatus comprising a bag of suitable flexible waterproof material, an inflating attachment with which the front of the bag is provided adj acent' to its upper have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in end, and means for closing said bag air-tight the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisabout the neck of a bather therein, the posiconsin, in the presence of two Witnesses.
tion of the inflating attachment being such I J. FRANK KING. 5 that it may be brought to the mouth of said WVitnesses:
bather by lifting from Within said bag. N. E. OLIPHANT, In testimony that I claim the foregoing I M. E. DOWNEY.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
