M. L. W. MARTINOT.
FOOT BATH.
No. 438,931. Patented oct.
A TTOHNE YS UNITEB STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
MARY L. W. JWIARTINOT, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
FOOT-BATH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,931, dated October 21, 1890.
Application filed June 16, 1890. Serial No. 355,630. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, MARY L. W. MARTINOT, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Foot-Bath, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a foot-bath receptacle, and has for its object to provide a portable device exceedingly simple and durable and capable of being compactly folded, and to so construct the receptacle that the inner surface thereof will be brought into gentle and agreeable contact with the flesh, thereby facilitating the removal of callous skin and promoting the action of the bath upon the cntire foot and ankle.
The invention consists inthe novel construction and arrangement of the several parts, as Will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 isaperspective view of the receptacle, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same.
The bath-receptacle is shaped to the contour of a stocking, closely approximating the form of the foot, and is preferably constructed of rubber. Areceptacle is employed for each foot, and is made a few sizes larger than the boot of the bather. The entire inner surface of the bath-receptacle is roughened in any approved manner-as, for instance, a number of closely-grouped teats 1l may be formed upon the said surface, as illustrated. The leg-section 12 of the bath may be of any desired height, and a strap, draw-string, or equivalent device may be attached to the legsection in order to secure the receptacle upon the bathers limb, thus enabling the bather to walk about the apartment with comfort while in the act of bathing the feet.
The foot-section 13 may, if found desirable,
be provided with a sole of thicker material than is the body of the bath-receptacle; but preferably the entire receptacle is made of one thickness of material. Instead of rubber being used in the construction of the receptacle, which, however, is preferred, any other Water-proof material 0f like nature may be substituted.
In operation a sufficient quantity of water and soap is placed in the receptacle and the foot of the bather is afterward introduced. If the bather desires to assume a sitting posture, occupying, for instance, a rocker, it is not necessary that the upper section of the receptacle should be attached to the limb, and as its entire inner surface is roughened any movement of the foot in the inclosingreceptacle will cause sufficient frictional contact to eifectually remove any dead flesh or callous spots, and at the same time the action of the lroughened surface upon the foot tends to materially soften the same and promote circulation.
If it is necessary or desirable to allow the foot to remain in the receptacle for any length of time, the said receptacle may be secured to the bathers limb, and when this is accomplished the bather, Without suffering the slightest inconvenience, may walk around the room or the house, and the act of Walking will accelerate the action of the bath.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A footbath receptacle constructed of a water-proof material, approximating the form of a foot and provided with a roughened inner surface, substantially as shown and described.
