LOCKING MEANS FOR LASTS.
T all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ANDREW W. REDIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Means for Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide .an improved means for looking a last on a support such as a spindle or shoe-tree.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a last and tree provided with a locking means embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the tree and last separated. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the tree;
The last 1 may be of any desired form, being herein shown as divided into two parts to form a heel piece 2 and the toe piece 3, said pieces being hinged together. In the heel piece 2 is seated a thimble 4: adapted to receive a tubular stud 5 mounted in the end of the tree 6. The heel piece also has a recess 7 for the reception of a pin 8 fixed in the tree 6. The tree has a slot 9 extending into its interior, the tubular stud 5 being secured in an enlargement 9 at the inner edge of said slot. A lever 10 lies in the slot 9 and is pivoted upon a pin 11 secured in the inner end of the tubular stud 5 one end 10 of said lever lying within said stud and having a projection, or hook, l2 thereon adapted to extend through registering openings 13 and 14 in the thimble 4t and stud 5 to lock the last 1 to the tree 6. A portion 10 of the lever 10 at the opposite side of the pivot 11 extends diagonally outward to the edge of the slot 9 so that the outer end of said lever may be engaged to swing the lever and withdraw the hook 11 from its locking position in the openings 13 and 1 1. A recess 15 in the face of the tree 6 permits of thus depressing the lever 10. A coiled spring 16 seated in the recess 17 in the tree 6 bears against the lever 10 and tends to hold the portion 10 of said lever in its outermost position, in which position of the lever the hook 12 projects through the open ings l3 and 14.
In securing the last and the tree together the thimble 4 is brought into registry with the stud 5 and the last moved toward the tree, the outer end of the thimble 4; engag- Specifieation of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 28, 1911.

ing the rounded outer edge of the hook 12 .locking engagement with the thimble 1, thus securing the last to the tree.
As will be observed, the locking means herein disclosed is strong and rigid, and at the same time is very simple, indeed, consisting of but few parts. The guiding means 4, 5, for properly positioning the last with reference to the support, is put to the additional use of forming a part of the lockmg means.
I have herein described the invention as used for looking a last to a tree, but it will be understood that the invention is equally applicable to securing the last upon a spindle or other support.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a last having a thimble seated therein, a support having a tubular stud adapted to enter said thimble, said thimble and stud having openings arranged to register, and a locking member carried by said support said member extending into said tubular stud and engaging in said registering openings for locking the last to the support.
2. The combination of a last having a thimble seated therein, a support having a tubular stud adapted to enter said thimble, said thimble and stud having openings arranged to register, and a pivoted lever carried by said support, one end of said lever extending into said tubular stud and having a projection adapted to enter said registering openings for locking the last to the support.
3. The combination of a last having a thimble seated therein, a slotted support having a tubular stud adapted to enter said thimble, said thimble and stud having openings therein adapted to register, a pivoted lever in the slot in said support, one end of said lever extending into said stud and having a projection adapted to enter said registering openings, the other end of said lever extending outwardly to the surface of the support, and means tending to hold said lever in its locking position.
4. The combination of a last having a thimble seated in its heel portion, a support said thimble, said thimble and stud having openings arranged to register, a pivoted lever lying in said slot, one end of said lever extending into said tubular stud and having a hook adapted to enter said registering openings, the other end of said lever extending outwardly to the face of said sup port, and a coiled spring seated in a recess in said support and bearing against the last mentioned end of said lever to hold said end in its outermost position.
5. The combination of a last having a V- shape recess between the forward section and the heel section thereof, of a support having a project-ion adapted to fit into said recess, the heel section of said last having a socket therein, a relatively small tubular stud having one end seated in said support,
lying in said tubular stud and having a projection adapted to interlock in said socket, the other end of said lever extending outwardly to the surface of said support to be manually operated.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
