Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July l, 1913.
Application filed March 29, 1912. Swan... 687,256.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LEON S. DUNN and ELIsnE GUnLrr, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Point Marion, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the objects of our invention are, first, to provide a strong and durable quick-acting wrench; second, to furnish the adjustable jaw of the wrench with a double locking mechanism; third, to provide a simple and inexpensive wrench that will facilitate the work of an artisan, and fourth, to provide a wrench consisting of comparatively few parts that are easily and quickly assembled.
We attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a'front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line III- II of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detached locking yoke.
A wrench in accordance with our invention comprises a shank 1 that is rectangular in cross section, said shank having the front side thereof provided with transverse teeth 2 and the rear side thereof with transverse teeth 3, the teeth 3 being arranged the reverse of the teeth 2. The outer end of the shank 1 has a fixed jaw 4 presenting a fiat gripping surface 5 at the front side of the shank 1, and the inner end of the shank has a detachable handle 6.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is an adjustable jaw body 7 which has the outer end thereof provided with a jaw 8 presenting a flat gripping surface 9 at the front side of the shank 1, said jaw cooperating with the jaw 4c in gripping the facets of a nut. The adjustable jaw body 7 has a longitudinal opening 10 providing clearance for the shank 1, and said jaw body has transverse slots 11 in the front and rear sides thereof, said slot-s being in communication with the longitudinal opening 10.
The body 7 is provided with a pair of spaced grooves which are indicated by the reference character 12. One groove is arranged upon both sides and front edge and the other groove is arranged upon both sides and rear edge of said body 7. Slidably mounted in the said grooves are oppositely disposed shiftable locking yokes 13. Each yoke has a cross head 14 and an inwardly projecting tooth 15 that extends into the slot 11 and engages the teeth of the shank 1. The yokes are reversely arranged and engaging the inner sides of the heads 14 of said yokes are flat compression springs 16 that are secured to the front and rear sides of the j aw body 7, as at 17. These springs retain the locking yokes 13 in a normally locked position, and in order to slide the jaw body 7 upon the shank 1 it is necessary that one or the other of the yokes be shifted by pressing against the cross heads 14 of the yoke.
By pressing upon the outermost yoke, the jaw body 7 can be adjusted toward the jaw 1 as the innermost yoke recedes over the teeth 3. By pressing the innermost yoke the jaw body can be shifted toward the handle 6 with the outermost jaw receding over the teeth 2.
It is thought that the operation and utility of the wrench will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such variations as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is A wrench comprising a shank having its front and rear edges formed with teeth, an adjustable jaw body slidably mounted upon the shank and having a pair of slots, one arranged near the outer end of the front edge of said body and the other near the inner end of the rear edge of said body, said body provided with spaced grooves, one of said grooves arranged upon each side and front edge and the other upon both sides and rear edge of said body, oppositely disteeth carried by the yokes in engagement posed shiftable yokes normally seated in With the teeth of the shank. i said grooves, said grooves intersecting said In testimony whereof We aflix our signaslots, fieeth parriel bly said yokes and extend}; tures in the presence of two Witnesses. 5 1n t rou '1 sa1 s ots an GHOZLOLIIO Wit thi teeth o f the shank, cross hea ds corfnected LEON DUNN to said yokes, and oppositely disposed fiat ELISEE GUELFF- springs secured to the edges of said body and having their free ends engaging said 10 cross heads for normally maintaining the Witnesses HENRY CHAMPAGNE, ALPHONSE BROGNEAUX.
