Be it known that I, LINWOOD G. TVHIT- Mir, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Sales-Books, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in manifolding sales books, and it consists in the novel features, structure and combinations of parts hereinafterdescribed, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The object of the invention is to providea very compact and convenient sales book of durable character adapted, among other purposes, for use by waiters in hotels, restaurants and the like.

The sales book of my invention, in its preferred embodiment, comprises two hinged book or cover sections in line with each other, a set of independent original check clips loosely hinged on rings at the upper edge'of the lower cover section and adapted to be turned on said rings to lie upon the upper section or the lower section at will, and a special check-slip-carrying-member hinged to one edge of the lower cover section and carrying a set of duplicate check slips which, by means of said hinged member, may be caused to lie on said cover section or be bodily turned below the same, the entire set of duplicate check slips being capable of being turned from over the lower cover section without any thereof being strained, bent or folded. The relation of the parts of the book are such that, as required, some of the original checks may be housed below the set of duplicate checks and others extend upon the upper cover section, while anyone of the original checks may be on the top of the duplicate checks and against the carbon sheet by which the transfer is made to the duplicate check of the writing made 011 the original check.

The duplicate check slips may be in the form of a pad, the slips being stitched together along one edge and perforated adjacent to said edge for convenient detachment, or said duplicate check slips may, according to the desired method of use, be entirely independent of one another and loosely held at one edge by the hinged member secured to the edge of the lower cover section.

The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a top View of a sales book embodying the invention, the book being shown in its open position and with all of the original check slips, except the top one, housed below the set of duplicate check slips and said upper original check slip being shown upon the set of duplicate check slips; Fig. 2 is a like view of the same, the entire set of duplicate checks and the carbon holder associated therewith being shown as having been turned outwardly toward the left, and the original check slips being shown as resting upon the lower cover section; Fig. 3 is a like view of the same, one of the original check slips being shown as having been turned over upon the upper cover section and the set of duplicate check slips being concealed below the lower cover section, having been turned downwardly and to the right from the position in which the duplicate check slips are shown in Fig. 2; Fig. at is an enlarged transverse section through the sales book 011 the dotted line 4t4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal section, partly broken away, through the sales book, on the dotted line 5-5 of Fig. l, the upper cover section being indicated in its closed position by dotted lines; Fig. 6 is an enlarged transverse section through the sales book on the dotted line 6-6 of Fig. 2, the pad of duplicate check slips and associated carbon carrier being shown as turned outwardly from the lower cover section of the book; Fig. '7 is a transverse section through the book in the condition in which it is shown in Fig. 3, the section being taken on the dotted line 77 of Fig. 3; Fig. 8 is an enlarged detached perspective view,taken from the outer side of the same, of the new member to be secured to one edge of the lower cover section for holding in a hinged manner the pad or set of duplicate check slips, the parts of said member being shown in their folded condition; Fig. 9 is a like view, partly broken away, of the same, with a portion of the parts thereof shown in extended position corresponding with the position of said parts represented in Figs. 2 and 6; Fig. 10 is a detached perspective view of a. pad of duplicate check slips adapted to be carried by the hinged member shown in Figs. 8 and 9 and employed without a separate carbon holder, said pad having secured at its top a carbon sheet, as is usual in this art, the drawing illustrating the lower left hand corner of the sheet turned upwardly, so as to disclose the carbon lower surface thereof; Fig. 11 is a detached View of a carbon holder which may be employed in connection with the set of duplicate check slips, when said slips are not padded and with a carbon sheet, the holder shown in Fig. 11 not being required when the pad, such as that illustrated in Fig. 10, is made use of; Fig. 12 is an inner edge View, partly in section, of the hinged box-like member for holding the set or pad of duplicate check slips; Fig. 13 is a top view of an open sales book corresponding substantially with the book shown in Fig. 1, with the exception that the set of duplicate check slips are held at their lower edge, the hinged member carrying the duplicate check slips being in Fig. 13 shown as secured at the lower edge of the lower cover section instead of at the left hand edge of said section; Fig. 14 is a view corresponding with Fig. 13 with the exception that one of the original check slips is shown as resting against the upper cover section and the duplicate check slips are concealed below the lower cover section, and Fig. 15 is a longitudinal section, partly broken away, of the modified form of book shown in Figs. 13 and 14, the section being on the dotted line 15-15 of Fig. 13.

In the drawings, referring to Figs. 1 to 12 inclusive, 2O designates the lower cover section, 21 the upper cover section, 22 a back section connecting in a hinged manner said upper and lower cover sections, 23 the original check slips, 24 the duplicate check slips, 25 a carbon sheet to lie upon the upper duplicate check slip with its transfer sur face facing downwardly against the same, 27 rings secured to the upper portion of the lower cover section and freely receiving in a hinged manner the original check slips 23, and 28 a box-like hinged member secured to the left hand edge of the lower cover section and adapted to detachably receive the set or pad of duplicate checkslips 24. When the duplicate check-slips 24 supplied to the member 28 are not paddedand the carbon sheet is not permanently secured on the top of the pad, said sheet will be held at its upper end by a carbonholder 29 detachably connected with said member 28.

The original checks 23 and duplicate check slips 24 will be suitably lined or spaced, and they may be of varied character as disclosed in Letters Patent heretofore granted to me, to-wit: 933,513 dated September 7, 1909 and 897,245 dated August 25, 1908. In both of said Letters Patent I illustrate the lower and upper cover sections 20, 21 and rings 27 of this application, said rings being employed in the boo-ks of the aforesaid Letters Patent for carrying the original check slips 23. It will, therefore, be unnecessary to give any special description of the original checks 23 and rings 27 or of the method of manipulating said original checks. The set or pad of duplicate check slips is held at the left hand edge of the slips within the hinged member 28, which member constitutes one of the more essential features of the present invention. The duplicate check slips 24 whether in the form of independent slips or in the form of a pad, such as shown in Fig. 10, are of known character, andtheir use in connection with a set of independent hinged original check slips such as those numbered 23, has been fully disclosed in the aforesaid and other Letters Patent of the United States granted to me. 7

The member 28 for holding the duplicate check slips consists of a box-like structure formed of lower and upper members 30, 31, respectively, a leaf member 32 hinged to the boxlihe structure along about the middle of its outer longitudinal face, as more clearly represented in Fig. 9, and a leaf member 33 hinged to the outer edge of said leaf member The box-like structure composed of the upper and lower members 30, 31 is open at its inner edge, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and the said lower member 30 is provided with vertical posts 34 which are rigidly secured to said lower member and extend upwardly to the top of said upper member 31, the latter being preferably provided with openings 35 in its top to receive the upper reduced ends of said posts 34, as shown in Fig. 4. The lower and upper members 30, 31 are provided with overlapping ends which are bulged outwardly, as at 36, to create a lock or spring latch when said members are closed together in the position in which they are illustrated in Figs. 4, 8 and 9. The lower and upper members 30, 31 are secured together by the hinge 37, which is at the adjoining longitudinal edges of the outer sides 38, 39 of said members 30, 31. The box-like structure created bythe members 30, 31 opens along the line of the hinge 37, and said hinge is at about the middle of the height of said structure, the outer sides 38, 39 of said members being about equal in height and one-half of'the structure being, therefore, formed by the lower member 30 and the other half by the upper member 31. When the upper member 31 is opened upwardly on the hinge 37, the posts or pins 34 become exposed and a pad or set of duplicate check slips properly perforated at the left hand edge may be passed downwardly on said posts or pins and upon the lowermember 30; thereupon the upper member 31 may be closed to the position shown in Fig. 4, to engage the upper ends of the posts or pins 34 and securely fasten the set or pad of duplicate check slips in place. When the upper member-"31 is closed the protruding portions 36 on the ends of the members 31, 32 snap together and latch said upper member closed, as may be understood by reference to the left hand end of Fig. 12. The leaf 32 secured by the hinge 37 along the adjoining edges of the lower and upper members 30, 31, constitutes a broad link, and it has secured to its outer edge, at the hinge 40, the plate 33 which is firmly secured to the lower cover section 20 by means of rivets 41 or other suitable means, as more clearly illustrated in Fig- .4. The hinge 4O securing the plates 33, 32 together should, in the finished book, be close against the edge of the lower cover section, as shown in Fig. 4, and the link 32 should be of suitable height to hold the boxlike structure formed of the lower and up per members 30, 31 at a sufficient elevation to permit the original check slips 23 to be housed below the duplicate check slips 24, as I illustrate in Fig. 4.

In Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive 1 illustrate the pad of duplicate check slips 24 as associated in the member 28 with a carbon holder 29, which is shown in a detached View in Fig. 11. This carbon holder 29 comprises a plate having perforations 42 to pass upon the pins or posts 34 of the member 28 and a recess 43 to straddle the upper end of said member 28. The carbon holder has placed upon it a sheet of carbon paper 25 and at its upper end is provided with a hinged clasp 44 to secure the carbon paper at its upper end. The set or pad of duplicate check slips 24 is placed on the base-plate of the carbon holder and the carbon sheet 25 is placed on top of the upper duplicate check slip, and when thus arranged the parts are in proper relation for use. The carbon holder 29 is not specially new and is substantially shown in the aforesaid Letters Patent No. 933,513. The carbon holder is the present instance is, however, detachable and is carried, whenused at all, by the hinged member 28 holding the duplicate check slips. When the duplicate check slips are in the form of a pad such as that illustrated in Fig. 10 bearing a carbon sheet, the carbon holder 29 will not be made use of and the pad will, by means of its perforations 45, be strung on the pins or posts 34 of the member 28. It is, therefore, unimportant to my invention whether loose check slips in connection with a carbon holder 29 are made use of or in lieu thereof a pad of utility and operation of the member 28 is the same in either instance, but in some lines of business it is preferred that the duplicate check slips be independent of one another and strung loosely on the pins or posts 34, and in such instances the carbon holder 29 should be made use of and applied with the loose check slips to the member 28. The articulated hinged member 28 enables the set of duplicate check slips to lie upon the original check slips housed on the lower cover section, as shown in Fig. 4, and it also permits the set of duplicate check slips to be turned horizontally outwardly from the lower cover section, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, or compactly folded under said lower cover section, as shown in Fig. 7 this latter position for the pad or set of duplicate check slips frequently being a desirable one.

hen the book is to be made use of as asales book for waiters in hotels 'and the like, the hinged box-like member 28 will, by preference, be secured to the left hand edge of the lower cover section 20, but when the book is to be used as a sales or order book in other lines of business, it will be found convenient to secure the duplicate check slips at their lower edge, and in such instances the hinged box-like member 28 instead of being applied to the left hand edge of the lower cover section 20, will be secured to the lower edge of said section, as I illustrate in Figs. 13, 14 and 15. The form of check book shown in Figs. 13, 14 and 15 is also a preferred style of book for some hotels and restaurants, and ordinarily is used with independent check slips and a carbon holder. The construc tion shown in Figs. 13, 14 and 15 is substantially identical with the structure shown in other figures of the drawing, with the exception of a variation in the proportions and the location of the box-like member 28 at the lower edge of the lower cover sect-ion instead of at the side edge of said section. WVhen the box-like member 28 is at the lower edge of the lower cover section, it permits the original checks to be housed below the duplicate checks and also enables the set of duplicate checks to turn outwardly from over the lower cover section and in line therewith, and also below said section.

'The method of employing the original checks 23 and duplicate checks 24 need not be described herein, since the manner of using the book is well understood and has been pointed out in several Letters Patent heretofore granted, especially in the aforesaid Letters Patent No. 897,245 and 933,513. In said Letters PatentNo.897,24-5 the set of duplicate check slips are secured in a hinged manner to the left hand edge of the lower cover section, and hence the method of making use of duplicate check slips thus hinged is illustrated in said patent.

The present invention resides in the combination of the member 28 with the cover sections and sets of duplicate check slips and original check slips located in cooperative relation to each other, all as more particularly hereinbefore described and defined in the following claims.

lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A manifolding salesbook comprising a back-section, a set of original check-slips secured thereto, a set of duplicate checkslips, a box-like member composed of upper and lower hinged-together members securing one edge of said set of duplicate checkslips, means hinging said box-like member to one edge of said back-section so that said member with said duplicate check-slips may be swung from off and below said section, and a carbon sheet on said duplicate checkslips, said original check-slips being secured by means adapting them, without detach ment, to be independently placed on said carbon sheet on the duplicate check-slips; substantially as set forth.

2. A manifolding sales-book comprising a back-section, a set of original check-slips secured thereto, a set of duplicate checkslips, a box-like member composed of upper and lower hinged together members securing one edge of said set of duplicate checkslips, a link hinged to the outer side of said box-like member and hingedly connected to one edge of said back-section, and a carbon sheet on said duplicate check-slips, said original check-slips being secured by means adapting them, without detachment, to be independently placed on said carbon sheet on the duplicate checlcslips, and said link permitting said duplicate check-slips to receive said original check-slips below them; substantially as set forth.

A manifolding sales-book comprising cover sections hinged together, a set of original check-slips secured on the upper end of the back cover section by means adapting them to be independently turned to lie upon either of said sections when the front section is opened from the back section, a set of duplicate check-slips, a box-like member composed of upper and lower hinged together members securing the left hand edge of said set of duplicate check-slips, means hinging said box-like member to the left hand edge of said back cover section, and a carbon sheet on said duplicate check-slips; substantially as set forth.

l. A manifolding sales-book comprising cover sections hinged together, a set of original, check-slips secured on the upper end of the back cover section by means adapting them to be independently turned to lie upon either of said sections when the front section is opened from the backsectio-n, a setof duplicate check-slips, a boXlike member composed of upper and lower hinged together members securing the left hand edge of said set of duplicate check-slips, a link hinged to the outer side of said box-like member and hingedly connected to the left hand edge of said back cover section, and a carbon sheet on said duplicate check-slips; substantially as set forth.

5. A manifolding sales-book comprising a base-member, a set of check-slips, a cooperating set of check-slips and a member securing one set of said check-slips at one edge and comprising a plate fastened to one edge portion of said base-member,- a plate-link hinged to the outer edge of said plate, and a box-like part composed of upper and lower members hinged together and to said link and provided witlrmeans for latching them together in closedposition; substantially as set forth.

6. A manifolding sales-book comprising a base-member, a set of cliecleslips, a cooperating set of check-slips and a member socuring one set of said check-slips at one edge and comprising a plate fastened to one edgeportion of said base-member, a link hinged to the outer edge ofsaid plate, and a boxlike part composed of upper and lower semiboX-like parts hinged together and to said link and providedwith means for latching them together in closed position, said upper and lower parts at their outer sides meeting on a longitudinal line between the top and bottom of the main boX-like part and being along said line hinged together and to said link; substantially as set forth.
