lle it known that I, ALEXANDER SALOF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State ot California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification. l

My invention an improvement in 'folding umbrellas, and has for its object, the provision of a simple, inexpensive, easily operated device or" the character specified. wherein a frame is provided, consisting of a sectional stick, and means tor holding the sections of the stick in rigid alinement., folding ribs having stretchers, and folding braces, together with a locking mechanism for the stretchers, operated by the braces, and a` locking mechanism for the braces operated by the runner.

The present embodimentl of the invention comprises a folding frame, composed of a sectional stick, sectional ribs, and braces of a particular construction, connecting the ribs to a runner. The stick is composed of three tubular sections 1-2 and 3, the said sections being in alinement when the frame is unfolded and open.

The section 1 has connected to its lower end, a handle or grip 4 and the said grip is longitudinally recessed, as shown at 5, to receive the section 1. A plug or filling block 6 is secured in the end of the section, by means of a double headed rivet 7, and a Specification of Letters Patent.

A cylindrical block9 is arranged above the spring', the said block having a transverse opening for receiving a transverse pin 10, whose ends extend beyond the block on both sides, and engage longitudinal slots 11 in the stick section. 'A wire or rod 12 is passed longitudinally through the block 9, and the spring 8 engages the lower end of the rod.

The upper end of the rod or Wire is secured to a substantially conical expanding head or spreader 13. A sleeve 14 is arranged in the stick section above the spreader, and the lower end of the sleeve is shaped internally to fit the spreader, being tapering or conical, as shown at 15, and the ysleeve is slotted longitudinally at the said fend, as shown at 16.

It will be evident that when the head or spreader is forced into the lower end of the sleeve, the said end will be expanded, and will be clamped against the inner surface of the stick section, to hold the parts from longitudinal movement. The upper end of the sleeve is closed, and a wire or rod 17 is threaded into a longitudinal recess in the said end.

The upper end of rod 17 is threaded into the lower end of a cylindrical block 18, slidable in the stick section, and the upper end of the said block is slotted transversely to receive one end of a bar 19. A shell 20 having oppositely arranged longitudinal slots 21 is connected to the bar 19 at the lower end of the shell, the said lower end being transversely slotted to receive the adjacent end of the bar, and rivets 22 are passed through the ends of the bar and the block and shell, to pivotally connect them to the bar. The shell 2O is connected rigidly to the stick section 2, by means of a rivet 21a.

The above mentioned elements, namely, the block 9, rod 12, and head 18 are moved toward the sleeve 14, by means of a collar 23, mounted to slide on stick section 1 above the grip, and the said collar is provided with overlying lugs 24 for engaging over the ends of pin 10, to lock the block 9 from longitudinal movement. The said lugs 24 are so arranged, that when the collar is turned angularly on the stick section in one direction the lugs engage over the ends of the pin, and when turned in the opposite direction they are disengaged.

Each of the ribs er stretcher-s is composed ot an inner' section 25, and an outer section 9.6. The link when the sections are 'folded stands at approximately a rinht angle to both .sections, thus permitting thein to told smoothly upon each other.

The sides of the shoe or housing; are e2;- tended downwardly, and one end of a bar 30 is piyo'ed between the entended sides, as shon'n at 31. rEhe meeting` ends ot the rib sections are beveled in opposite directions, and the outer section is provi ded with a longitudinally extending` lug,` 52, which engages beneath the end of the inner section.

The inner end of the inner section is piyoted to the notch 84, on the section 3 the stick, and each rib is connected intermediate its ends to the runner to be described, by nieans of' a sectional brace 23S-3G and 37. rThe sections 35 and 36 are .in alineinent, when the umbrella is unfolded, and the section 37 is piyoted to the section near its outer end, as shown at 38.

The cuter section 36 of the brace has a bar secured in its inner end, and the inner end of the said bar entends inwardly beyond the pivotal connection il of the tiro sect-ions 35 and 36. The free inner end et bar l() is slotted transversely, as shown at to receive a linger or lug` 43 on the sliding bar 39.

The sections 35 and 3G are tubular, as shown at lleat their adjacent ends, to receire and hold the bars 39 and 410. The inner end et section 35 is pivoted to a notch 45 en the runner to be described, and the inner end oii section 3? is piroted to a notch i6 bclon' notch d5, and also on the runner.

The runner bet'ore mentioned consists el' a .sleeve d? fitting the stick, and having` the notch l5 at its upper end, a second sleeve 48, litting over sleeve 17 and han/ingv notch 46 at its upper end, and a third sleeve 19, litting over both sleeves and 4S. The sleeve 48 is shorter than sleeve 4:7, and the lower end ol sleeve el?) is reduced. at its lower end, as shown at- 49, to lit sleeve 1-8, below the lower end et sleeve il?.

Sleeve il? is provided with a pail` ot annular ribs 50 and 5l, intermediate its ends, and a coil spring 59. encircles the sleeve iii' between the lower end of sleeve i8 and rib 50. .il second spring` encircles the sleeve di' between ribs 50 and 5l, and the rib 5l, seats against the upper end of the reduced portion 49 ol' sleeve i9. The sleeve 4:9 is slotted lonaitiidinally, as shown at 55, and is provided with notches 5G and 57, at opposite ends and opposite sides of the slot.

The section 3 of the stick is provided with a tip 65, and the grip 4 may be of any desired shape.

Vhen it is desired to fold the frame, the operation is as follows The collar 23 is designed to hold the ribs or stretchers in folded position, as shown in 5, and is also designed to separate the sections of the stick. F or this function the coller is engaged with the pin 10, as shown in Fig. 5, the said collar being slidable. on the stick in the usual manner. The collar is rst moved into the dotted line position of Fig. 4, and is then turned to engage the lugs 24 above the ends of the pin. Vhen the collar is now moved back toward the grip, the block 9 and the spreader 13 is moved with the collar, thus releasing the clamping action of the sleeve 14. The

2 and 3 are thus separated from the section 1, and by pulling the

3 and 2 away from each other, until the bar 19 is opposite the joint between them, the said

sections

2 and 3 may be folded upon each other.

The spring 52 is designed to move the sleeve 48 upward, to hold the rib sections in alinement, while the spring 53 prevents movement of the sleeves 4S and 49 with respect to each other. It will be noted that the section 1 of the stick is provided with an annular shoulder 1a near its upper end, and that the sleeve 14 is provided with an eX- ternal annular shoulder 14a for engaging beneat-h the shoulder 1a when the sections are locked together.

To disengage the brace sections, the sleeve 48 is pressed downwardly, until the lugs 553-58a are in register with notches 56 and 59a. The sleeve 48 is then turned slightly to engage the lugs with the notches. This movement of the sleeve moves all of the bars 39 inwardly, and disengages each of the fingers 43 from the openings 42 of the outer section. lWhen the braces are folded, the stretcher sections are disengaged, and may also be folded. It will be noticed that the aliuement of the brace sections locks the stretcher sections in place. The notch 34 is riveted to the stick, as shown at 67. The

l claim:

1. ln a folding umbrella, a rib composed of alined sections, links arranged on opposite sides of the adjacent ends of the sections and pivotally connected thereto, a housing connected with the outer end of the inner section, said sections having their in ner ends beveled in opposite directions to permit the outer section to fold upwardly upon the inner section, the said ends contacting when the sections are in alinement,

said outer section having an inwardly extending lug engaging beneath the adjacent end ofthe inner section, a brace pivo-ted to the housing between the connection of the links with the respective sections and having a cam shaped head for engaging the lug and holding it against the inner section when the umbrella is unfolded.

2. In a folding umbrella, a folding rib comprising inner and outer alined sections, the adjacent ends of the sections being oppositely beveled on their upper facesa pair of links connecting the sections, the said ends contacting when the sections are in alinement, the outer section having an inwardly extending lug engaging beneath the outer end of the inner section, and a brace pivoted to the outer end of the inner section between the connection of the links with the sections and having means for engaging the lug and pressing it against the inner section when the umbrella is unfolded. l

3. In a folding umbrella, a plurality of braces, each comprising alined inner and outer sections, a pivotal connection between the meeting ends of the sections, the outer section having a longitudinal recess at its inner end, said sections being of channel shape, a bar slidable in the channel of the inner section toward and from the recess and having a finger for engaging t-he recess to lock the sections in alinement, a runner comprising an inner sleeve having a notch at its upper end, the inner section of the brace being connected to the notch, a second sleeve slidable on the first sleeve, and provided with a notch, a link connecting the bar having the finger to the notch, an inclosing sleeve on the lower ends of the iirst and second sleeves, said first sleeve having an annular rib below the lower end of the second sleeve, a spring between the rib and the second sleeve for pressing the notches together, and means in connection with the second sleeve and the inclosing sleeve for locking said second sleeve to the inclosing sleeve with the notches separated.

4. In a folding umbrella, a plurality of braces, each comprising alined inner and outer sections, a pivotal connection between the meeting ends of the sections, the outer section having a longitudinal recess at its inner end, said sections being of channel braces, each comprising alined inner and outer sections, a pivotal connection between the meeting ends of' the sections, the outer section having a longitudinal recess at its inner end, said sections being of channel shape, a bar slidable in the channel. of the inner section toward and from the recess and having a finger for engaging the recess to lock the sections in alineinent, a runner having a notch 'for connecting the inner ends of the inner sections together, a second notch movable on the runner toward and from the first notch, a connection between the said second notch and the sliding bars of all the Y braces for simultaneously moving the said bars to engage and disengage thein from the recesses, a spring pressing the second notch toward the first notch, and means for holding the said notch awa;7 from the first notch.

(3. ln a folding umbrella, a plurality7 of braces, each comprising alined inner and outer sections, a pivotal connection between the meeting ends of the sections, the outer section having a longitudinal recess at its inner end, said sections being of channel shape, a bar slidable in the channel of the inner section toward and from the recess and having a finger for engaging the recess to lock the sections in alineinent, a runner having a notch for connecting the inner ends of' the inner sections together, a second notch movable on the runner toward and from the first notch, and a connection between the said second notch and the sliding bars of all the braces for sinniltaneously inoving the said bars to engage and disengagc them from the recesses.

ln a folding umbrella, aplurality of braces, each comprising alined inner and outer sections, a pivotal connection between the meeting ends oi' the sections, the outer section having a longitudinal recess at its inner end, said sections being of channel shape, a bar slidable in the channel. of the inner section toward and from the recess and having a finger for engaging the recess to lock the sections in alineinent, a link connected at one end to each bar, and a notch connected to the other ends of the links :for simultaneously n'ioving the bars.
