UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUY W. FERDON, OF CRE SSKILL, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO SILVER &COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SOAP-HOLDER.
Application filed March 16,
To all whom it may-concern Be it known that-I, GUY FERDON, acitizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cresskill, county of Bergen, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Soap-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to those soap holders, for bath-roomsand lavatories, in which a soap dish is supported in convenient positionby a frame adapted-to be secured fixedly to the wall or to be attached to the rim of a bath tub; and the present invention consists in an improved soap holder ofthat type, and in certain novel combinations of parts embodied therein, as hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
The leading object of this invention is to provide for readily removing and replacing a securely supported soap dish of china or the like in the metallic frame ofv a soap holder of above type, so. as to facilitate I cleansing and renewing such soap dishes, without rendering the dish or drip liableto be kicked or knockedupward out of its frame by the foot or hand of a person using the bath-tub orwash-basin.
Other objects will be set forth in the gen eral description which follows.
T we sheets of drawings accompany this specification as part thereof.
Figure 1 is an end view of the improved soap holder; Fig. 2 is a front edge view showing, in dotted outline, the soap dish partly removed; Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the frame detached; Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view; Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are perspective views illustrating modifications.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in all the figures.
The improved soap holder, in each of its forms, includes a metallic frame, a or a or a or a", and a horizontally removable soap 7 dish, I); the latter preferably and conveniently of china or the like.
ln the first species, represented by Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive. the frame a is fixedly attach able to a wall or the like by screws 1 and 2 or their equivalent, and the frame a in cludes a rim member, 3, preferably of what is known as slotted wire construction, with its slot 3 at bottom; rigidly attached lips or supporting flanges 4t, 5 and 6, projecting downward and inward, at front,

pieces inserted =edgew-ise into the slot 3 (Figs. 3 and 4) of the frame member3, and fixedly fastened in place by brazing or soldering a post -member, 7, having a rigid recessed-ball connection with the frame member 3, and a suitable escuteheon, 8, perforated for theattaching screws *1 and 2, or
their equivalent,=- and rigidly attached to said post 7. The frame member 3 and dish I) are substantially rectangutardn plan view, as indicated by Fig.3,- with rounded corners; and the dish'is conveniently and preferably of china. or the like'as aforesaid, and made with upper edges, preferably those of an upwardly flaring rim,-:=adapted to interlock with said supporting fiangesad, 5 and 6 of the frame a, and nonmally' supported thereby so as -to dependbeneaththe frame as shown inyFig. .1 and in full-lines in Fig. 2'; the-front and back edges of the dish being substantially parallel and adapted to interlock with said fianges L- and 5 The dish is removed and replaced by sliding it horizontally endwise,'as illustrated by the dotted outline at b in Fig. .2; it'is thus adapted to be readily cleansed or replaced without disturbing the frame a 'or its fastenings, and is not liable to be displacedby accident; while the means by which these results are accomplished are :neat in appearance, inconspicuous, and practically immovable;
In the second species, Fig. 5, the ball of the frame a located at the extremity of the post member 7 as above described, conveniently supports, by means of an upwardly projecting bracket, 9, a tumbler holder, 0, or the like, so as to form what is known as a combination fixture. Otherwise the improved sOap holder as shown in this figure may be of the same construction as that of said first species, and is so shown; and said bracket, 9, and supplemental holder, 0, may be of any appropriate known or improved construction.
In the third species, Fig. 6, the frame (f is common to a soap holder constructed as above described and a sponge holder, d, of hollow wire construction located at one end of the soap holder; the soap holder frame member 3 as above described being formed in part by a cross bar, 10, which carries the end flange 6 above described; and the frame 00 being provided as supporting means with a pair of flat hooks, 11, 12, adapted to hook over the rim of a bath tub.
The soap holder proper with its horizontally slidable soap dish 6 .is intended .to be otherwise of the construction above described, and is so shown.
In the fourth species, Fig. 7, the frame a includes a frame member 3 which may be identical in construction with that of the first species, and is so shown; but in said fourth species the frame member 3 is rigidly attached by a pair of ball connections, 7", to the two ends of a wire support, 13, adapted to be hooked over the rim of a bath tub.
The supports. or attaching means may obviously be of other known or improved constructions if desired; the slotted-wire construction of the frame member 3 is not essential to the present invention in its broader aspect; and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. Said slotted-wire-construction, shown by Figs. 3 and 4, is however an important feature of the preferred make of the improved soap-holder; and is applicable to all the several embodiments of the invention represented by the drawin s. The smooth rounded top of the wire is neat in appearance, and free from liability to catch dust, while the depending flanges are rigidly attached in a neat and secure way, and the front and back flanges 4 and 5 are adapted to press against the front and back of the soap dish so as to hold the same tightly in place, and to accommodate themselves to slight irregularities of surface such as are liable to occur in soap dishes of china or the like.
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention, and desire to patent under this specification:
1. The combination, in a soap-holder, of a substantially rectangular rim member of slotted-wire construction having its slot at bottom, substantially rigid flange-forming members fastened in said slot, a post member and escutcheon rigidly united with each other and with said rim member, and a horizontally removable soap-dish having upper edges adapted to slidably interlock with said flanges and normally supported thereby, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
2. A soap holder having, in combination, a metallic frame comprising a rim member substantially rectangular in plan view and of slotted wire construction having its slot at bottom, with downward and inwardly inclined flange-forming members fastened in said slot, and a depending and horizontally removable dish having upper edges adapted to slidably interlock with said flange members and rim and normally supported and secured thereby against accidental vertical displacement, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
3. An improved soap holder for bath rooms and lavatories comprising a metallic frame characterized by a rim member, substantially rectangular in plan view,'of slotted wire construction, having its slot at bottom, with downward and inwardly inclined flange-forming members fastened in said slot at opposite sides of the rim, and a de pending dish of china or the like, having an upwardly flaring rim the upper edges of which are adapted to slidably interlock with said frame, and horizontally detachable therefrom, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
