ALFRED EDWARD ADAMS, OF HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SANDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I Application filed April 18, 1913. Serial No. 762,079.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED EDWARD A AMS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at 13 Jarvis street, in the city of Hamilton, in the county of Wentworth, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanders, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to sanders and it has more particular reference to that type of device adapted for use on street cars railroads and the like.
The main object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective device for sanding street car or railroad tracks. With this object in view my invention consists essentially in the features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out by the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a transverse vertical section of a sander embodying my improvements as applicable more particularly to street cars; and Fig. 2, is a sectional elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
According to my invention I construct a casing or shell 1, from appropriate material and fit same with flanges 2, 2, by which said shell may be appropriately secured to the floor or underframe of a street-car or the like.
Superposed on the above casing 1, I fix in any suitable manner a hopper 3, transversely of which is revolubly mounted a shaft 4, having keyed thereon a sleeve 5, provided with radially projecting arms or prongs 6, 6. These prongs 6, 6, serve in use as agitators to prevent the sand fed into the hopper 3, from clogging.
The hopper 3, is downwardly extended within the casing 1, at 7, to fit easily between the flanges 8, 8, of a longitudinally fluted drum 9, pinned or otherwise secured rigidly on a transverse shaft 10. This shaft 10, is freely revoluble in bearings 11, 11, provided for the purpose on the casing 1, and at one end thereof I fix a gear wheel 12, in mesh with a correspondingly toothed pinion 13, keyed on the alining end of the aforesaid shaft 4, in the hopper 3.
14, is a ratchet wheel fixed on the other end of the shaft 10, and it is adapted to be operated by a foot lever and pawlnot shownin the well known way, said parts however forming no part in my invention.
15, is the discharge outlet or chute for the casing 1. In some instances I may inclose the gearmg 12, 13, or 14, in an appropriate air-tight casing and operate the device by air pressure directed against vanes provided for the purpose on the face of one of the gear wheels.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that by operating the ratchet 14, step by step the distributing drum 9, will be rotated to discharge a quantity of sand through the chute 15, onto the rails. At the same time the agitator 5, 6, will be relatively operated by the gears 12, 13, to eflectively break up or dispense any clogging of the sand in the feed hopper 3.
While I have specifically described one practical embodiment of my invention, I wish it clearly understood that I do not limit myself exclusively thereto as changes in the shape, arrangement and other combinations of parts being possible without in any way departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A sander comprising a casing, having a discharge opening, means for fixing said casing in position, a longitudinal fluted drum revolubly mounted transversely in said casing, end flanges carried by said drum, a feed hopper superposed on sald casing and having its bottom depending between said flanges, an agitator mounted transversely of said hopper, means for operating said distributing drum and agitator simultaneously, for the purpose set forth.
2. A sander comprising a casing having a discharge opening, means for fixing said casing in position, a longitudinally fluted drum revolubly mounted transversely in said casing and having end flanges, a feed hopper superposed on said casing and extending downwardly between the aforesaid flanges,
